Excellent textbook for review, but this is not a first course.

In the author's preface, he states that the prerequisites are "one semester of advanced calculus or real analysis at the undergraduate level". So, this book cannot be judged as an 'intro to real analysis'.

I just want to comment on how I have experienced this book. Let me mention that I am using this for self-study after completing a course using Rudin's Principles of Mathematical Analysis (we covered every chapter except Ch. 10 on integration in R^n). I picked this up to review analysis with the goal of covering function spaces and measure theory with more emphasis that Rudin. This book does just that! But, I also wanted a book that stays in R for the Lebesgue measure. Having read the first 3 chapters of Folland, I didn't really think I 'understood' the material even though I could do the exercises (but not without a lot of sweat and coffee). (At one point I felt I became a function: [input] facts, assumptions then [output] proofs, ie hw exercises.) Folland does everything for abstract measures and treats the Lebesgue measure as a corollary.

Having said that, this books hits the spot.

A previous reviewer said this book was informal, unprofessional, and chatty. I do agree with him on that the book is very informal in the exposition and is chatty. I feel that this might be very distracting for those who do not wish to be specialists in analysis, or to those who are seeing analysis for the first time. However, for someone who has finished, say Baby Rudin, this book IS AMAZING. His chatty 'foreshadowing' is the best part, since by now you are trying to see the 'big picture'. In this respect, the chattiness tells of the shortcomings of the previous theory and points one to the right questions to ask.

I think this book shines for the purpose of an intermediate course between Baby Rudin and graduate real analysis ala Folland. As such, the exercises are at the perfect level and include standard, important, and interesting results and extensions. I don't think this book is rigorous enough for a real course at the graduate level, however.

A final note, the editorial (why?)'s placed throughout do get annoying but I feel they make sure you do not take results for granted, an all too common habit when reading advanced math.

I highly recommend this text, especially for self-study.
This book is like taking a course one who loves the subject and knows it very well.
And what is more, she wants to communicate her knowledge to you.
She has anticipated your difficulties and is prepared to guide you.
The material is well motivated; the historical asides help you understand and appreciate the material even more.
There are a lot good exercises.
One caveat is that analysis is on R not R^n.
The material is pitched at the senior level.
I wish I had this book when I was studying this subject.

Should be a literary classic!

My husband's grandmother gave this book to me and I hesitated to read it. But when I did, I was drawn into the house. Starting with the second book of the series rather than the first actually made me into one of the characters of the book because I was new to the house. The house knew secrets that I thought would somehow be revealed to the occupants over time, but the house was silent. Each generation lived, echoing the generations before but never knowing the root of all they did. The story goes on just as life. A person is born. And the end of their story is that they die. And the world goes on. Each chapter is the story of an individual who comes to the house and becomes a part of its history, told in the first person. You love some characters and you hate others. And the house sees all and is silent. The end of the book you find, is just the end of another life. And you realize that the world continues and other stories will go onward. Reading The Town House, you realize that the stories in The House at Old Vine are going full circle in this tragic and comic thing we call life. Justice is not always found. Secrets are not always told. And the world lives with those results. You'll feel a part of these people's lives and realize that, even centuries ago, humans are just as human as you and I. And humans will go onward. My offspring will have offspring who will have offspring and my life will be forgotten, but the consequences of my life will likely follow themselves to the next generation.

I love this book.

I read this book when I was a young teenager and loved it. I have thought about it over the years with affection. When I got the chance to order it I did, and it's still a great book. I love the stories of the lives and the years through the common thread of The Old Vine. It's Norah Lofts at her best.

I would give ten stars if I could!

I first read this book about fifty years ago. I bought it several times, loaning it to friends and then replacing it when it was never returned. About thirty years ago I ordered it and the other two books in the Suffolk House trilogy in library binding because I knew I could not bear to be without them. I am so happy to be able to add them now to my Kindle library! They are old, dear friends who are always with me.

Personally, I think Norah Lofts, more than any other author of historical fiction, has the knack of bring the past right into your kitchen table. I enjoy Ken Follett's books, and Edward Rutherford's books, but I think Norah Lofts' works surpass them. She has been underrated for years and I'm so delighted to see her work being rediscovered. Thank you for bringing them to us in digital format!

Salander and Blomqvist return

Stieg Larsson left the world with two of its most unlikely heroes. The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo introduced us to Mikael Blomkvist and the enigmatic Lisbeth Salander, but The Girl Who Played with Fire takes us back into the dark past that created Salander. Without spoiling the story, I will say that the intensity of the first book was only ramped up in the second, and you will be hanging onto every word until the very last page.

I am an enormous fan of Larsson. This book just doesn't quite make the grade.

As an author, Stieg Larsson is someone of whom you just cannot say enough good things about. Not only was his story telling unique in style, but in substance as well. His characters are fleshed out above and beyond a mere mystery. The plots of his stories are so complex and deep, that you get lost in them and once you are finished you look back in awe over the creation.

I don't know enough about the life and early death of Stieg Larsson. All I know is that the first two of the three books he left to be published comprise what can only be considered to be one of the all time classic mystery/thriller genre book series.

Once again we are given the admirable character of Mikael Blomkvist as a protagonist. The story starts off with him and his familiar cast of Milennium Magazine getting ready to publish an expose on the sex trade of Sweden. We are also re-acquainted with Salander, a quite introvert genius (negative note #1, Larsson is falling into an old trap where the author falls in love with his characters. Salander is morphed here in this second installment from a simpler character into one with almost super-hero qualities which instead of setting her apart, instead makes her feel almost like a character based on a Marvel comic book.)

Ok, so you know that I love Larsson, love the characters, and I even really enjoyed the story. Why would I give this book only 4 stars then??? Well, this is based on purely personal reasons for the most part. I am a reader who hates jumping from character to character, and the more characters who find themselves in the roll of first person, the more I hate the story. However, "The Girl Who Played With Fire" relies upon this trick more heavily than just about any other novel I have ever read. Larrson writes in nice short chapters, and they are always seen through someone different eyes. I bet I could go back and dig up 30 different first person studies. Larsson, great writer that he is, still manages to avoid the most common flaws here and pulls it off better than most. It was just a lot more bumpier of a read than it needed to be.

Perhaps most egregious, Larsson plays with the plot, suspense and arc of the story by mashing all of the story lines into one convergence. I am not giving anything away here because this information can be found on the books dust jacket. We are following Salander along quite nicely. Once she is accused of the triple murders, she flees and the story forgets her. Alot of what thus ensues could have been answered quickly if we had only stayed in her head and not started to jump all around from character to character.

Or perhaps I could put it this way... Larsson falls back on a lazy mans writing trick by jumping from one persons mind to the next. He fills in gaps and keeps the story moving along this way. However, the most important bits surrounding Salander, Larsson goes the opposite route and keeps these moments hidden from the reader. Thus giving a very false sense of urgency and suspense. I can't forgive him for trashing the novel so heavily with this ploy. The rest of the writing structure and style would definitly merrit 5 stars, but...

Slowly revealing Lisbeth

Lisbeth Salander, an angry young hacker and cyber-embezzler, is out of the frying pan and into the fire as the prime suspect in three murders. Yet Larsson hides from the reader key details about how Lisbeth became a suspect and whether she is guilty - we don't want to believe it, but there are these facts to consider. . . . Slowly the third person narrator takes the reader inside the heads of key players to reveal some - but not all - of Lisbeth's secrets as well as the hidden actions and motives of people all around her.

Mikael Blomqvist returns to do what he can to defend his former lover, whom he believes to be innocent. Larsson sustains the tension in their relationship by almost but not quite bringing the two face-to-face throughout most of the book.

While I know little about computer technology, I appreciate that Larsson included 21st Century technology in his plots. In this era, I expect brilliant sleuths to use the Web but hope they won't get too technical or cross the line into the kind of computer science fiction I suspect I am seeing on some tv detective shows. Lisbeth's skill as a hacker and user of gadgets manages to strike the right balance.

This sequel does a good job of developing the terrific main characters from Larsson's "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo". Lisbeth is a fresh, tough and fascinating 21st Century woman and this book shows us some of the sources of her smart and skeptical nature. I look forward to learning more about her complex background and inner life in the next installment of the trilogy. I already suspect that the first chapters of "Fire" will play an important role in the plot of the third book.

This book is about "threads" and how to use them. "Thread" is just a name for a basic software "thing" that can do work on a computer. A thread is smaller, faster, and more maneuverable than a traditional process. In fact, once threads have been added to an operating system, a "process" becomes just data--address space, files, and so forth--plus one or more threads that do something with all that data.

With threads, you can build applications that utilize system resources more efficiently, that are more friendly to users, that run blazingly fast on multiprocessors, and that may even be easier to maintain. To accomplish all this, you need only add some relatively simple function calls to your code, adjust to a new way of thinking about programming, and leap over a few yawning chasms. Reading this book carefully will, I hope, help you to accomplish all that without losing your sense of humor.

The threads model used in this book is commonly called "Pthreads," or "POSIX threads." Or, more formally (since you haven't yet been properly introduced), the POSIX 1003.1cn1995 standard. I'll give you a few other names later-but for now, "Pthreads" is all you need to worry about.

As I write this, Sun's Solaris, Digital's Digital UNIX, and SGI's IRIX already support Pthreads. The other major commercial UNIX operating systems will soon have Pthreads as well, maybe even by the time you read this, including IBM's AIX and Hewlett-Packard's HP-UX. Pthreads implementations are also available for Linux and other UNIX operating systems.

In the personal computer market, Microsoft's Win32 API (the primary programming interface to both Windows NT and Windows 95) supports threaded programming, as does IBM's OS/2. These threaded programming models are quite different from Pthreads, but the important first step toward using them productively is understanding concurrency, synchronization, and scheduling. The rest is (more or less) a matter of syntax and style, and an experienced thread programmer can adapt to any of these models.

The threaded model can be (and has been) applied with great success to a wide range of programming problems. Here are just a few:

Large scale, computationally intensive programs High-performance application programs and library code that can take advantage of multiprocessor systems Library code that can be used by threaded application programs Realtime application programs and library code Application programs and library code that perform I/O to slow external devices (such as networks and human beings). This book assumes that you are an experienced programmer, familiar with developing code for an operating system in "the UNIX family" using the ANSI C language. I have tried not to assume that you have any experience with threads or other forms of asynchronous programming. The Introduction chapter provides a general overview of the terms and concepts you'll need for the rest of the book. If you don't want to read the Introduction first, that's fine, but if you ever feel like you're "missing something" you might try skipping back to get introduced.

About the author

I have been involved in the Pthreads standard since it began, although I stayed at home for the first few meetings. I was finally forced to spend a grueling week in the avalanche-proof concrete bunker at the base of Snowbird ski resort in Utah, watching hard-working standards representatives from around the world wax their skis. This was very distracting, because I had expected a standards meeting to be a formal and stuffy environment. As a result of this misunderstanding, I was forced to rent ski equipment instead of using my own.

After the Pthreads standard went into balloting, I worked on additional thread synchronization interfaces and multiprocessor issues with several POSIX working groups. I also helped to define the Aspen threads extensions, which were fast-tracked into X/Open XSH5.

I have worked at Digital Equipment Corporation for (mumble, mumble) years, in various locations throughout Massachusetts and New Hampshire. I was one of the creators of Digital's own threading architecture, and I designed (and implemented much of) the Pthreads interfaces on Digital UNIX 4.0. I have been helping people develop and debug threaded code for more than eight years.

My unofficial motto is "Better Living Through Concurrency." Threads are not sliced bread, but then, we're programmers, not bakers, so we do what we can.

The primary advantage of threaded programming is that it enables your applications to accomplish more than one task at the same time by using the number-crunching power of multiprocessor parallelism and by automatically exploiting I/O concurrency in your code, even on a single processor machine. The result: applications that are faster, more responsive to users, and often easier to maintain. Threaded programming is particularly well suited to network programming where it helps alleviate the bottleneck of slow network I/O.

This book offers an in-depth description of the IEEE operating system interface standard, POSIXAE (Portable Operating System Interface) threads, commonly called Pthreads. Written for experienced C programmers, but assuming no previous knowledge of threads, the book explains basic concepts such as asynchronous programming, the lifecycle of a thread, and synchronization. You then move to more advanced topics such as attributes objects, thread-specific data, and realtime scheduling. An entire chapter is devoted to "real code," with a look at barriers, read/write locks, the work queue manager, and how to utilize existing libraries. In addition, the book tackles one of the thorniest problems faced by thread programmers-debugging-with valuable suggestions on how to avoid code errors and performance problems from the outset.

Numerous annotated examples are used to illustrate real-world concepts. A Pthreads mini-reference and a look at future standardization are also included.

About the Author

David R. Butenhof, a recognized Pthreads authority, was deeply involved in the creation of the IEEE POSIX standard as well as the X/Open threading extensions, which were fast-tracked into X/Open XSH5 (UNIX98). An engineer at Digital Equipment Corporation, he was the lead architect and developer of Digital's own threading architecture and designed and implemented much of the Pthreads interfaces on Digital UNIX 4.0.

Not bad

I found this book very useful when learning about POSIX threads though the whole impression is a bit mixed.
The book gives everything you need to start writing POSIX-style multithreaded applications. Very complicated (in my opinion) issues of multithreading are explained very clearly. Every new concept is immediately illustrated with a sample code.
The appendix contains a detailed description of all mentioned pthread functions, so you can use it as a reference too.
At the same time I am not sure if book is completely up-to-date. E.g., in chapter 7 the author explains in details what is a read/write lock and presents a code with a mutex and 2 condition variables to use as an r/w lock. In the appendix he says that r/w lock can be incorporated into POSIX as a separate entity in future. I work with Solaris 8 and I found that r/w locks are already in my POSIX library.
The style of book is quite special, you may love it, or you may hate it. Sometimes the very basic concepts are explained in such a way and with so repetitions that it becomes even a bit annoying. Those bailing programmers are also a bit annoying. Quotes from Lewis Carroll seem a bit off topic too. Of course it's just my opinion.
In general I think the book worth its money and recommend it to everyone interested in the subject.
Prerequisites are simple: knowledge of C and general POSIX. E.g., I recommend a book by Mr. Gallmeister on real-time (non-multithreading) POSIX.

Basically Good Stuff

Well written, easy to understand. I enjoy reading it thorougly. Only reason it isn't a 5 star is that the font is so freaking large. Come on! My enlish teacher wouldn't let me get away with this kind of stuff... Neither will I.
But, for learning about POSIX threads, this book is nice. Not too technical, not to 'POSIX for Dummies' either...

Detailed and easy to understand

This book is great for beginners in Posix. It is detailed and clear. It gives careful explanation of the major Posix functions and complement them with full source codes which compiles perfectly, making everything easier to understand.

Great creative rehearsal techniques

This is a great book for bringing focus into every rehearsal. I use it every day with my high school concert band. It has helped each individual play with more confidence by not always having to rely on stronger players. It has helped them listen to each other and really think for themselves. It offers concrete ideas for improving dynamics, rhythm, intonation, tone quality, blend, articulation, and scales using endless creative methods that can be applied to specific pieces we are working on. The students learn to listen to each other and play as a group. This is the most useful book I have ever read on this topic. It is an excellent book I highly recommend to every conductor.

Great Book - Great Presentation - Directors Should Purchase

This book is outstanding! For years I have used the techniques presented in this book. There is no question about it, the techniques presented here will help your group improve and grow.

I have used this book in Japan with the groups that I work with and every time I do, they always sound better and play better. It is interesting to see how the Japanese conductors use and re-use the material presented.

There are so few outstanding books on this topic that this book truly rises to the top. You can employ the techniques in this book at all levels, early, middle, advanced and pro. After you try it you'll see what I mean. My middle school kids love the challenge and the semi-pro's in Japan I work with love it as well! It is both intellectually stimulating and fun.

Along with this book, I suggest buying the performer copies and video. Take some time to really understand the way Lisk presents the information and then work the techniques into your routine(s). Once you get the hang of it, there are literally hundreds of ways to manipulate the techniques, so find some that help your group the most and don't overplay them - change them around - so as to keep the group moving ahead and growing.

I can't say enough good things about this book and the techniques it offers - I think if you ask any great conductor about them they will all agree - this is indeed a fantastic teaching tool and a great approach to learning!
