All I can say is "HOLYCR@P!!!"

Without reservation or hesitation, I recommend PHOENIX RISING.
It contains absolutely disturbing parallels to current history and actually caused me to break out in a cold, fear-induced sweat. Easily the most terrifying novel I have ever read by far!!!

Very good story line. Almost makes you think was written for the current government situation that we are experiencing. Checked other 2 following books from library on my kindle. Equally good books. Didn't particularly like the way series ended.

This book though fiction could be the future. It seems to be based on from fact or at what looks like fact and go into the future. It was fast paced, funny and thrilling. I enjoyed reading it so much I did not put it down from start to finish.

A gem for a book study!

After reading this beautiful book filled with real life stories of struggle, sacrifice, hardship and commitment, I am reminded of how I will be part of my family and friends' stories. My reactions and actions, whether positive or negative, will be observed, remembered and told to future generations. Do I want the stories to reveal an entitlement attitude or a defeatist viewpoint? Would I much prefer to be remembered as that kind of person who could and would pull a wagon with a bucket of water to the diary cattle in a Dakota blizzard? Each of the stories in this book reminded me that even in hardship or tough times, we must always be grateful for life, our loved ones and for the special contribution I can make. This is a must read and read again book. What a powerful find for a book study!

An usual--and moving--self-help book

Only a generous soul could write a book like "Gratitude." This book shows how we can understand our lives better through the lens of gratitude--and thereby grow in wisdom and reach--and that we can use gratitude to aid others as well. In 13 short chapters with titles such as "Hardship," "Hospitality," "Misfortune," and "Forgiveness," Froyen tells stories of his own life that show gratitude's vital role. His "Reflection Today" and "Reflection Tomorrow" exercises at the end of each chapter are fine spurs for growth.

Great Read

I received an autographed copy of Dr Froyen's book from a friend. I have known the author since I was a child and he was a college professor. His life has exemplified his belief in the power of gratitude. I enjoyed the personal stories and reflections in the book as he looks back over a life well lived and invites the reader to do the same. I have focused on gratitude in my own life for many years and really enjoyed Dr Froyen's perspective.

About the Author
Dalton Conley is University Professor at New York University. He holds faculty appointments in NYU's Sociology Department, School of Medicine, and the Wagner School of Public Service. In 2005, Conley became the first sociologist to win the prestigious National Science Foundation's Alan T. Waterman Award, which honors an outstanding young U.S. scientist or engineer. He writes for the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, The Nation, Slate, and Forbes. He is the author of Honky (2001) and The Pecking Order: A Bold New Look at How Family and Society Determine Who We Become (2004). His other books include Being Black, Living in the Red: Race, Wealth, and Social Policy in America (1999), The Starting Gate: Birth Weight and Life Chances (2003), and Elsewhere, U.S.A. (2009). The writing is as bright as the cover.

I had to buy this for a Sociology 100 class. Although it's a textbook, there are a lot of references to pop culture making the boring drudgery of learning a lot less painful.

Conley also has a sense of humor, something numerous other textbook authors lack. You can often find something to laugh about in each chapter - my personal favorite being a picture of The Onion's mockery of Oprah (chapter 3).

Of all the sociology textbooks to read, this one may be the best.

Most creative and enjoyable textbook in college.

No doubt one of the most effective, engaging books to revolutionize the way students perceive "textbooks." Even if you open the book with little regard for sociology, the author extracts your curiosity through relatable anecdotes, tangible world issues, and a fond sense of humor so that each flip of the page feels lighter the more you read. You can almost feel his presence patiently walking you through each point making sure that you're engaged and understanding his points. Thumbs up for the astounding, creative graphics that could not have complemented his writing better.

I was looking for the Third Edition, not the ...

I was looking for the Third Edition, not the Core Third Edition. When I put in the correct ISBN the Third Edition came up, when I clicked to buy the e-text the Core Third Edition came up and said "replica of the book." I assumed it was the same. It's not. Make sure you double check before purchasing. I ended up spending another $30 to rent the correct version to finish my course. My mistake, but not sure why when you click on the e-text it takes you to a different version (Core Third Edition), when there is an e-text version of the Third Edition too.

Pearls of wisdom from a real leader

The latest book from Steve Murrell, - [...] - founding pastor of Victory Churches in the Philippines and president of Every Nation Churches worldwide. The book begins with a story from Pastor Steve's youth, where he recalls his high school relay team coming in first place only to be disqualified because they forgot the baton. Based on the premise that it doesn't matter how well we do if we forget to pass the baton he goes on to explain the importance of passing the "baton" of the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the next generation. The stories in this book are based on Steve's personal experience as a cross-cultural missionary and church planter as well as his current role as leader of an international movement of churches.

100 Years From Now: Sustaining a Movement for Generations is definitely a manifesto for the Every Nation movement in particular, but it is much more. A truly fascinating story to read

Six hours of sunlight are enough to power the world for the entire year. May it be so? As someone who lives in the polar desert of Northern Greenland, I always wondered why can't we use all this endless light that comes free from the skies and instead spend fortunes on carbon-based fuel that is so hard to get in the High Arctic.

Whenever I get to sit for hours on the cold canister with oil while travelling on dog-sled across the frozen fjord (especially during the polar night!), I wonder why we choose this ugly inconvenience instead of choosing the generous gifts of nature which we reluctantly refuse to accept. Why are we so arrogant? And indeed, why?

Ask Margaret Heckel, the author of Desertec, and she will tell you. Desertec has answers to the questions that had intrigued me for years. The sun, says Margaret, is so powerful that we could get all the energy needed if only we'd have enough solar power plants and wind power plants. Even more charming is the idea to put these plants in the deserts and then transport the energy via special power lines into the industrial zones of the world. Thus the name Desertec.

Margaret Heckel tells this story in a fascinating way and gives a lot of political and historical background: After all, it was a US-engineer who built the first solar thermal power plant in Egypt. In 1913!!! Think of it, almost one hundred years ago, this technology was already working - only to be displaced by oil and completely forgotten. Now the time for renewables has finally and ultimately arrived: Heckel's book is a truly fascinating story to read.

Patience Rewarded

Albert Payson Terhune, the famed dog writer of the 1920s and 1930s who authored the Lassie books, often told this story about his friend Wilson to illustrate the deep love that people and dogs share. It also shows how sometimes what seems to be in the best interest of all concerned may not apply when one of those concerned is a dog.

Wilson’s dog, Jack, was an energetic, six-year-old collie that would meet him every day at the trolley station when Wilson returned from work. This was a ritual that had begun when Jack was a pup. The dog knew the route to and from the station like the back of his paw—and following that route was the highlight of his day. So when Wilson changed jobs and had to move to California, he thought it best to leave Jack on his home turf in Philadelphia with a relative. He explained all this to the dog upon leaving and told him that they both would have to adjust to new homes.

But Jack didn’t want a new home. He would not stay with the family he’d been left with. He returned to Wilson’s old house, even though it was boarded up, and there he passed his solitary days beside an abandoned chair beneath the portico. But every evening, tail wagging, he trotted off to the trolley station. For as long as Jack had been in the world, Wilson had always taken the same trolley home from work, and Jack had been there to greet him. But evening after evening, there was no sign of the devoted dog’s master. Confused and sad, he would return alone to the deserted house.

The dog’s depression grew. He refused the food left for him, and as the days passed, he became thinner and thinner, his ribs noticeable even through his thick blond coat. But every evening, ever hopeful, he’d go to the station to meet the trolley. And every evening, he’d return to the porch more despondent than before.

No one knows why Jack’s new family didn’t contact Wilson, but Jack’s deteriorating condition did not go unnoticed. A friend who lived nearby was so upset by it that he took it upon himself to send a telegram to Wilson in California, informing him of the dog’s situation. That was all it took.

Wilson bought a return train ticket immediately; he knew what he had to do. Upon arriving in Philadelphia, he waited several hours just so that he could take the same trolley that he always did when coming home. When it arrived at the station, sure enough, there was Jack, waiting and watching as the passengers got off. Looking and hoping. And then suddenly there he was, his beloved owner. His master had returned at last! Jack’s world was whole once more—and so was Wilson’s. Wilson later told Terhune, “Jack was sobbing almost like a child might sob. He was shivering all over as if he had a chill. And I? Well, I blew my nose and did a lot of fast winking.”

Wilson took his devoted dog, Jack, back to California with him. They were never separated again.

Wonderfully Told Stories

Part of the continuing success in the "Chicken Soup for the Soul" series is the ability of the editors to reap the fertile field of talented, young writers. Debbie Roppolo's "Some Snowballs Don't Melt" is a beautifully told story about the bond between a working man and his working dog. Sad, yet uplifting, the story demonstrates how the relationship between man and animal can transcend mortality. Ms. Ropollo brings the tale of her father and his German Shepherd to life with intimate and exquisite details. One can easily see stories like this being transformed into family movies, the type not often seen in this day and age.

You MUST get this book for all dog lovers.

I bought this book based on the reviews and everyone was so right! It's a very moving book and has humor and compassion. It has all the elements of a Soup Lovers Book. This book has touched my soul and im still in the first section about love. I would have never thought that a dog could teach us so much but this book proves just that.

The first story had me in tears when the owner left the state and left his dog with his relative. The dog became sick and near death because he missed his owner and as soon as they told him he was losing weight and was dying the owner came BACK and the dog was waiting on him in there usual spot at the train station. There is so much more to that story I won't spoil it. That story and the first 5 that I read so far has touched my life in more ways then one.

If you love dogs, have a dog, don't have one or is getting one? Then I reccomend this book for you, I would give it 10 stars if I could. We are getting our new Shih Tzu puppy next month in Dec and I cannot wait to get him. This book proves that love comes in all forms sizes and shapes!
