Great guide for restaurant reviews!

This is one of three books we used on our trip in November of 1998. The best part of this book is the detailed reviews of all of the eating establishments. There are a ton of restaurant reviews, and they are very detailed. We found the recommendations to be right on the money. The do it yourself tours and adventures are not as detailed in this book as in the Lonely Planet book. If you're more of an adventurous type, I would recommend getting the Lonely Planet book as well. The combination of these two books would make the perfect guide. You can read all about our trip and how we used these two books in my travel report on Subacharter.com.

Worth buying and reading carefully while planning your trip

Jan Prince's book is dense with well-organized information about Tahiti and her islands. If you read carefully, with attention to her suggestions, you can't fail to find the right island for you, or right combination of islands. Here is what we did, and most came from her book:

We had 10 days and split it as follows: 1st day and night Papeete (plane landed at 4 a.m.). Next four nights in Bora Bora. Next three nights in the Marquesa Islands (Hiva Oa), last night (before plane left at 2 a.m.) back in Papeete. This combination worked out well, giving us a good contrast between the lush and luxurious Bora Bora, and the incredibly beautiful remote island of Hiva Oa, where Paul Gauguin lived out his last years and is buried. Belgian singer-poet Jacques Brell, too.

Everyone said Papeete would not be a highlight, but spending one night there worked out logistically and we got to see the artistan component of the annual Heiva Nui Cultural Festival. The level of the crafts on sale was excellent and better than what we saw elsewhere (all the good stuff had been sent to the festival). Because we landed on July 4th, when we arrived at the hotel we were handed invitations to a bash being hosted that night by the president of Fr. Polynesia in honor of US Independence Day and Tahiti Air's inaugural NY-Papeete flight (which we were not on). All AMericans in town that day were invited, whether tourists or residents, and it was a great party. Dancers from various islands, singers, a spread of salads and perfectly grilled meats. If you are going to be there next July 4th call the US consulate ahead of time to find out if they are going to do a repeat and make sure you get an invite.

The Bora Bora Langoon Resort and Spa was elegant, friendly, beautiful, and pricey. The spa was a treat (facials, massages, wraps) and I recommend making reservations in advance for the treatments you want as they are well booked. My husband got sick on Day 3 and was attended by an absolutely competent Basque-born, French trained female doctor who took the boat to make the "house call," and got him back on his feet in no time (he had a stomach flu). Nest time I think we would opt for one of the other islands Jan describes which are less expensive, less organized in terms of acitivites, but equally beautiful. Most seem to have at least one luxury resort.

From Bora Bora we flew back to Papeete and immediately out to Fatu Hiva, one of the Marquesan islands, and from there to Hiva Oa. A long trip made memorable by the last leg which we made in a small 19 seat prop plane. The plane flew low, over Fatu Hiva's stunning terrain (we could see the aircraft's shadow below us) and then directly into the clouds, emerging to land on Hiva Oa. Wow!

Hiva Oa's only hotel (4 stars) is the Hanakee Pearl Hotel. Small (14 bungalows), charming, and special because of the personal attention the manager and his wife devoted to each guest. The trip to the giant tikis of Puamau was through more amazing, untouched terrain. The Gauguin exhibit and Brell center in town are worth a morning at most (I should have read more gauguin before coming). We did not go Tahuata but should have. The hotel's tiny boutique had the only good collection of Marquesan wood sculpture on the island.

My biggest prolem was figuring out what to do on the day we arrived --just after midnight. And on the day we left -- again just after midnight. In the end we sprung for hotel rooms both days. A good decision, After arriving we had the the luxury of an early morning shower and a few hours of sleep before exploring Papeete. We stayed at the Mandarin, Prior to departure we stayed at the Sheraton (from 3:30 p.m. until midnight), had a great suite (upgraded from an el-cheapo room), and after a lst minute shopping spree, we able to shower, dine and sleep a few hours before heading out.

You can get better prices calling the hotels directly and booking internal flights between islands with Air tahiti via email. The staff person we worked out details with by email was very polite, helpful and efficient.

For those of you who have to keep up with the world just a bit while on vacation, both the Bora Bora Langoon Resort and Sheraton were able to give us an internet modem hookup in the room (pricey but worth while). the Pearl Lodge let us hook our laptop to their modem in the lobby. Before leaving LA we got through [...] (Jan's book has details) a french Polynesian sim card which we slipped into our cell phone. We were available for emergencies, etc., from the minute we landed. All incoming calls on the VINI card were free.

Tahiti & French Polynesia Guide. An A+.

This book is THE visitor's guide to French Polynesia, whether you want to spend $1,500 a night for the best resorts, or $15 a night for a campsite. Are you trying to figure out which 5-star resort is the best place to stay? Wondering whether a pension offers hot or cold water showers? Need to know what days of the week an excursion operates and at what times of the day? It's right at your fingertips. I have been to French Polynesia twice. I can't imagine how I survived those trips without this book. You simply must not travel to French Polynesia without a copy in your luggage.

The author is an American ex-pat who has lived in French Polynesia for more than 30 years and has worked there as a tour guide. She has dedicated a chapter to each of the Society islands with highly detailed sections on: Transportation to get to/from the island; Intra-island transportation and rentals; Orientation; Places to stay (from deluxe to budget); Places to eat; Places to shop; Tours, excursions and self-guided drives/walks; Public parks; Entertainment; Scuba-diving and water sports; Banking; Safety; you name it. Additional chapters cover the Tuomotus, Marquesas, Australs and Gambiers. Contact information is provided for each business covered.

About the Author

Brian Goetz has helped students of all levels achieve success in mathematics for sixteen years. As a curriculum specialist for the Grand Rapids Area Precollege Engineering Program, he created numerous materials to motivate and inspire underserved populations. Brian also ran a math learning center at Bay de Noc Community College, where he helped students exceed their expectations of success. Brian has been teaching at Kellogg Community College for eight years. A common thread throughout all his teaching experiences is that an active and supportive environment is needed for students to succeed. With this belief close to his heart, Brian finds working with the other authors to be one of the most rewarding experiences of his career. When he isn’t working, Brian spends quality time with his family and friends, mountain bikes, and kayaks. He dreams of spending a summer kayaking around Lake Superior.

 

Graham Smith has spent his life immersed in education. He was raised in a family of six teachers, where dinner conversations often centered on public education. Since then, Graham has gained sixteen years of classroom experience, and spent the last 9 years teaching full-time at Kellogg Community College (KCC). The majority of Graham’s professional life has been focused on the education and success of the under-prepared student, which he continues through this work as the Developmental Mathematics Coordinator at KCC. Graham’s substantial training and experience in mathematics and education, as well as his training and certification in developmental education through the Kellogg Institute at Appalachian State University and the National Center for Developmental Education, provide a comprehensive understanding of developmental mathematics. This background and experience provide the author team with a well-developed perspective. In his spare time, Graham enjoys spending time with his wife Amy, catching big fish, playing the guitar, and tinkering with his car that runs on recycled vegetable oil.

 

Dr. John Tobey currently teaches mathematics at North Shore Community College in Danvers, MA where he has taught for thirty-nine years. Previously Dr. Tobey taught calculus at the United States Military Academy at West Point. He has a doctorate from Boston University and a Master's degree from Harvard. He served as the mathematics department chair for his college for five years. He has authored and co-authored eight college mathematics textbooks with Pearson. He is a past president of New England Mathematics Association of Two Year Colleges (NEMATYC) and is an active member of the American Mathematics Association of Two Year Colleges (AMATYC). In 1993 Dr. Tobey received the NISOD award for excellence in teaching.

About the Author

Marc H. Meyer is the Robert J. Shillman Professor of Entrepreneurship and the Matthews Distinguished University Professor at Northeastern University. Northeastern is ranked the #1 Cooperative Education academic institution in the United States, where student internships are closely integrated with academic programs. Dr. Meyer is the founder of the Northeastern's Entrepreneurship and Innovation Group in the College of Business, where he has helped numerous alumni, graduate students, and alumni start their own companies. He is also the Director of the High Technology MBA, a program focused on entrepreneurial innovation within established corporations. In addition, Dr. Meyer current leads Northeastern's executive education programs in innovation and corporate venturing, including the Smarter Planet internal training program for IBM. The focus of all this work is innovation, entrepreneurship, and enterprise growth.

In research, Dr. Meyer is an internationally recognized scholar in the field of innovation. The Power of Product Platforms (written with Alvin P. Lehnerd, The Free Press, NY, NY, 1997), continues to be a leading work in the management of architecture for products, systems, and services. The Fast Path to Corporate Growth: Leveraging Knowledge and Technologies to New Market Applications (Oxford University Press, 2007), links innovation with enterprise growth and is used by industry leaders such as IBM to develop and operationalize growth strategies.

In this new book, Entrepreneurship: An Innovator's Guide to Startups and Corporate Ventures, Dr. Meyer returns to his roots as a technology entrepreneur. He has been part of the start-up teams of software companies that include VenturCom (acquired by Citrix) and Acustream (Great Falls, VA). He has also designed next generation products and business strategies in the consumer, industrial, healthcare, and financial sectors for corporations that include Proctor and Gamble (diapers and shaving systems), Mars, Inc. (chocolate and pet food), Caterpillar (equipment for mining and construction), McKesson (drug distribution systems), and Lincoln Financial Group (new insurance products.) It is the richness of these diverse experiences that Dr. Meyer brings to his teaching and research.

Dr. Meyer is a graduate of Harvard College and holds masters and doctoral degrees from M.I.T. While a PhD student in his mid-20s, Marc left MIT for five years to build his first software company before returning to complete his PhD. Marc remains a Visiting Scientist in the Engineering Systems Division at M.I.T. Throughout, Dr. Meyer has relished working with the next generation of technology entrepreneurs in their startups and corporate ventures.

Frederick G. Crane is an Executive Professor of Entrepreneurship & Innovation at the College of Business at Northeastern University, Editor of the Journal of the Academy of Business Education, and a Research Fellow at the Institute for Enterprise Growth. He was formerly a professor of marketing and entrepreneurship at the University of New Hampshire and a chair and full professor at Dalhousie University. He currently teaches courses in entrepreneurship, innovation, and entrepreneurial marketing.

Dr. Crane grew up in a family business and also founded and operated several of his own businesses. In addition to being a serial entrepreneur, he has also been an investor in several startups, served on the advisory boards of entrepreneurial firms, and worked as a consultant for angel investors, venture capitalists, and government agencies on venture funding projects. In addition, he has developed and delivered numerous training programs and workshops for entrepreneurs and small business owners.

His academic research activities have resulted in more than 100 publications, including eleven books, and he currently sits on the editorial boards of several academic journals. His current research stream intersects the domains of marketing, entrepreneurship, corporate venturing, and innovation and he is conducting ongoing research on the psychology of entrepreneurship, entrepreneurial education, entrepreneurial branding, and innovation readiness. Dr. Crane is also an award-winning educator who has received numerous honors for teaching excellence over the past twenty years.

A Must Read!

This book is so good that I wouldn't take any commentary or treatment of Pauline literature that came after this book seriously if they did not deal with this book. Hays is not just an excellent NT scholar, but also a brilliant writer. All these factors make it a must-read​ for any serious student of Paul.

The word alive and active

Is Scripture an unchanging word, fixed in the past, or is it dynamic, alive, taking on new meanings as it addresses competent readers in the present? Who is a competent reader? And, Richard Hays asks, "If the word is so alive and active on the lips and in the hearts of the community of faith, how then must we read?" These are questions that, directly or indirectly, occupy most of Echoes of Scripture in the Letters of Paul, where Hays examines some of Paul's highly innovative scriptural readings. He treats Paul's letters as "hermeneutical events," in which Paul reinterpreted Scripture for his churches. More than is usually recognized, Paul made use of intertextuality, embedding fragments of Scripture in his own discourse; in most cases he did so allusively, rather than by direct citation - the reader has to listen to the echoes of the original text in what Paul has written. Often enough, the echo is too faint to be noted. Of one instance Hays writes, "Any reader who knows where the words come from will surely smile in recognition of the point; most readers will miss the point altogether." The immense value of this study lies in its potential to lead earnest readers to a keener appreciation of Paul, as Hays uncovers suppressed allusions in a number of examples taken from Romans, First and Second Corinthians, Galatians, and Philippians.

The effect is almost always surprising; sometimes one wonders at Paul's subtlety; at other times one asks whether it is really Hays' ingenuity that has conjured up an echo that did not occur to Paul. As it turns out, it does not matter. Hays argues that to limit the interpretation of scriptural echoes to what Paul intended is to create artificial limitations and restrict the hermeneutical freedom which Paul himself employed. For one thing, "what he intended is a matter of historical speculation;" for another, "Scripture generates through Paul new figurations." The implicit point is that a modern interpreter of Paul can learn from him how to read Scripture imaginatively, yet faithfully. This is treated at length in the fifth and last chapter of the book. Before then, in the first chapter, Hays reviews different approaches to Pauline hermeneutics and proposes his own, taking leads from literary-critical discussions of the "phenomenon of intertextuality." The following three chapters are a tour de force of riveting interpretation. If I have to single out one major theme among several - and which Hays works over and over from different angles - it would be that Paul understood Scripture (i.e., the OT) as prefiguring the church; it was neither annulled nor superseded, but pointed to the gospel as proclaimed by Paul. Hays speaks of the transforming power of Scripture rightly understood. "The meaning of Scripture is enacted in the Christian community, and only those who participate in the enactment can understand the text." He passionately pleads the same point in the page before last, a fitting conclusion to an insightful and original work: "Community in the likeness of Christ is cruciform; therefore right interpretation is cruciform. ... Any reading of Scripture that requires of us something other or less than this is a false reading."

This remarkable book has not gone unquestioned by other scholars, and has generated lively debate among Paul's interpreters. Who should read it? There is more than a hint that Hays was writing for the academic community; but non-professionals familiar with biblical (or literary) studies can read it with profit and a sense of fulfillment. All readers must bring to it an energetic and open mind.

Hearing the right echoes

Richard Hays in his "echoes" and "Conversion of the Imagination" provides significant insights to Paul's use of the Old Testament. There are many perspectives on Paul these days but Hays understands the apostle rightly. What Hays does so well is not only point out the explicit OT references but the "echoes" and illusions to the Hebrew Scriptures that inform Paul's understanding of who the people of God truly are.

About the Author
"Sunil Saxena has over three decades of experience in Print, New Media, Social Media, Mobile Journalism, Media Education and Media Research. He incubated Gaon Ki Awaaz, India’s first voice-based news and information service for rural India that won to South Asian awards and one National award for innovation. He is one of the first Indian journalists to move to New Media in 1998. As Vice President of the Internet Company of The New Indian Express Group, he set up 12 websites in five languages, and also set up the group’s online information and research service. As a print journalist, he has held key positions in leading Indian newspapers (the Times of India, The New Indian Express, and The Pioneer) and magazines (India Today, India Week). He is currently the Director of the Amity School of Communication, Amity University Rajasthan. Earlier, he was the Dean of the International Media Institute of India and of the Asian College of Journalism. He has also had two stints with the Times School of Journalism. As a researcher. He has conducted a study on the state of media in Malawi on behalf of UNESCO."
