About the Author
David Pawson: born in 1930, was the son of a Methodist minister, his grandfather, a Professor of Agriculture. He began his career with a degree in Agriculture at Durham University. After completing an MA in Theology at Cambridge University, David became a chaplain in the Royal Air Force, before pastoring a number of churches in England including the Millmead Centre in Guildford which became a model for many UK church pastors. In 1979 David left Millmead to develop a wider international Bible teaching ministry. Millions of copies of his ‘Unlocking the Bible’ teachings have been distributed to over 120 countries. He is a writer who speaks with clarity and uncompromising faithfulness to the Scriptures. He is widely considered to be one of the world’s finest biblical expositors alive today.

Really Encouraging Read

Very well written in an easy to understand language. David always seems to do a wonderful job communicating and delivering the scripture and that's why I continue to read them. This book has been very encouraging so far! It seems David tries to make his books affordable for all to read, but I would like to have a hardcover on some of them so that I could pass them down to my kids/grandkids one day. This is a very good read, simple to understand, and encouraging for any believer. I recommend it!

Thought Provoking Stream-of-Consciousness Narrative

Life and Death of Harriett Frean follows, as one might expect, the early life through to the death of Harriett Frean. She was brought up to be a perfect Victorian lady, and taught early on to be "morally beautiful", which in turn led her to become prideful in any little self-sacrifice she made. As a result, she lived a narrow existence, self-righteously congratulating herself on how she lived her life.

There is very little descriptive passages or even action. Instead, the story is told mainly in thoughts and conversation, in the stream-of-consciousness style. This is extremely effective in telling Harriett's story.

It is a short book, and easy to read, but still manages to be quite thought provoking. I recommend it for anyone who enjoys a stream-of-consciousness narrative; other readers might not find it as engrossing.

A Strange Little Story

I am currently interested in reading books written during the turn of the century. This is why I was led to this little book. It is small enough that I read it in one sitting.

It was a strange, sad tale, and I had to keep reminding myself of the time period in which this piece was written so I could view the writing from another vantage point. It helped to read the introduction to set the mood for this book, plus it helped to better understand the background of the time period.

I did enjoy Sinclair's character descriptions; they were so thorough that the reader could conjure a mental image of the person. If you like period pieces, this one certainly portrays the constrained life of a woman of the time.

Amusingly ordinary

The title says it all...The story started when Harriett Frean was a baby and her mother cooed over her, reciting a nursery rhyme. It ended when she was dying at the age of sixty-eight, while she listened to the same nursery rhyme from somewhere at the back of her head, and her last words were "Mamma". If the author had made the title "The Life and Death of Spinster Harriett Frean", then there's nothing more to say in this review.

Harriett was an old maid; otherwise, hers was a very ordinary life. It's amusing that a story can be woven out of something ordinary; it's even part of Project Gutenberg! Probably, it was really the author's idea to write a story about the ordinary life of an "almost recluse". Somehow it has to be told; somehow the world has to know that there are many Harriett Freans out there.

In her life story, one thing stands out: Harriett never wanted to disappoint. When she was a little girl, she vowed to always obey her parents because she saw firsthand how disappointed they can be when she disobeyed. As a woman, she chose to let go of the man she loved to protect her best friend. But her desire to please did not always end in a happy note, as one of the characters bluntly pointed out to her. In the end, she was all alone.

We have a lot of old maids in our family. I have an old aunt who lives with her cats. She has opened her house to boarders so technically, she doesn't live alone. But boarders come and go, so she really does not have deep relationships with anyone in her household. This story made me think about her, and if there's anything good that came out of it, it's my renewed vow to not forget to keep in touch with her.

The book by Phillips is very good. It is very well researched and informative. I have learned many things from it, and I have a doctorate in European history from the University of Notre Dame (1978).

A very good account of European expansion.

This book covers the period from 11th to 15th century. It offers a very good and profound summarizing study of the European travellings and discoveries to Asia, Africa and America before Columbus. I, personally, liked it very much for the detailed account given for Asian countries visited by Europeans (for me it was especially Odoricus de Pordenone, that I liked, but I got some new information of Giovanni di Piano Carpini, William Rubruck or Johann Schiltberger). Very interesting is the account about African travels and the American pre-Columbian voyages. There is a numerous summary of literature, but there are no editions of sources in original cited, only English translation. At least the writings in Latin or other European languages should be there. I highly recommend it to anybody who is interested in the Middle Ages and especially the East (the Asian part is the most detailled).

About the Author
Molefi Asante is a distinguished scholar and is best known for creating the discipline of Black Studies over 25 years ago.  He is the Editor for the Journal of Black Studies (Sage) and the Encyclopedia of Black Studies (Sage Reference, 12/04  933 units, $82k LTD).  His recent research has centered on the history and present developments of African religions.

Dr. Maulana Karenga is professor of Black Studies at California State University, Long Beach.  He received his B.A. and M.A. in  political science from UCLA, a Ph.D. in political science from United States International University and a second Ph.D. in social ethics from the University of Southern California.  An activist-scholar, he is chair of The Organization Us, National Association of Kawaida Organizations and executive director of the Kawaida Institute of Pan-African Studies.  He is also creator of the pan-African holiday Kwanzaa and author of numerous scholarly articles and books, including Introduction to Black Studies, Kwanzaa: A Celebration of Family, Community and Culture; Kawaida: A Communitarian African Philosophy; Odu Ifa: The Ethical Teachings; Selections From The Husia: Sacred Wisdom of Ancient Egypt; and Maat, The Moral Ideal in Ancient Egypt: A Study in Classical African Ethics. A leading scholar in the development of the discipline of Black Studies, his fields of teaching and research are: Black Studies theory and history, Africana (continental and diasporan) philosophy; ancient Egyptian (Maatian) ethics; ancient Yoruba (Ifa) ethics; African American intellectual history; ethnic relations and the socio-ethical thought of Malcolm X.  He is currently writing a book on Malcolm X and the Critique of Domination: An Ethics of Liberation.

About the Author
Thomas Troward (1847-1916) was an English author whose works influenced the New Thought Movement and mystic Christianity. Troward was a divisional Judge in British-administered India. His avocation was the study of comparative religion. After his retirement from the judiciary in 1896, Troward set out to apply logic and a judicial weighing of evidence in the study of matters of cause and effect. The philosopher William James characterized Troward's Edinburgh Lectures on Mental Science as "far and away the ablest statement of philosophy I have met, beautiful in its sustained clearness of thought and style, a really classic statement." According to Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) archivist Nell Wing, early AA members were strongly encouraged to read Thomas Troward's Edinburgh Lectures on Mental Science.

Deep Thoughts

Mr Troward thinks deeply and seeks to bring the reader into an understanding of basically, "cause and effect". He paints a broad picture of how things start and the law or principle by which they originate and translate into their intended purposes. He uses science frequently to show that all things that we have been able to use for our advantage we have discovered certain laws by which they work. Once we find the laws we have been able to unfold a myriad of uses and applications of the laws for a vast number of things. The "Law and the Word" is his premise for the explanation of how things originate and produce their effects. He starts with God and creation. God spoke (his thoughts) and things emerged and took shape and form. Man being an expression of God made in his image accomplishes the things he does in the same manner by his word (thoughts) and the law translates them into reality. These realities may come into existance by various means including his own efforts in cooperating with the law of his being. Troward says that it is always the law and the word, but the word comes first and the law brings it to pass. Although Mr Troward ventures into some areas of thought that are quite challenging to get a hold of, he often returns to a scriptural basis for most of his insights. Of all the new thought writers Thomas Troward is perhaps the most scriptually focused in all of his writings. There is a reverence and a respect for the bible and he constantly uses biblical texts to help support his conclusions. He certainly uses terms like "we may reason" or the word "speculate" in stating some postulations but he unwaveringly uses biblical quotes with a firmness of faith and affirms his obvious recognition of the authority of Christ and the meaning of redemption. The last chapter is full of scripture and he states clearly his belief in "the atonement" and reconciliation with God that allows the higher dimensions of man's ability to use the Law and the Word in unlimited ways. The Law and the Word is a excellent outline of just what the tittle states. Troward being one of the forefathers of New Thought gives a very insightful and scientific outline of the power of our thought and spoken word and how the Law works. If you have not read some of his earlier writings like "The Creative Process in the Individual" and become familiar of his way of teaching and writing it may be hard to grasp. I have been fortunate enough to been exposed to some excellent teachers in New Thought and once I "got" how Troward writes it opened new doors of thought and perspective. In all honesty Troward was the forefather of Qauntum Physics from a intuitive level. So I suggest when you read him have a open mind and open heart and let his words speak to you and the glimmers will shine through. About the Author
Yusuf Altintas is current NSERC Pratt and Whitney Canada Research Chair in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of British Columbia. He is also the Director of the Manufacturing Automation Laboratory at the University of British Columbia. He is a Fellow of CIRP (1997), ASME (1998), SME (2007), Canadian Academy of Engineers (2007), Pratt and Whitney Canada (2008), University of Tokyo (2010) and Royal Society of Canada (2010). He is the author of the first edition of Manufacturing Automation: Metal Cutting Mechanics, Machine Tool Vibrations, and CNC Design (2000).

An essential aid for the serious production engineer

Due to my job I am forced to read a lot of technical literature. I never got as much technical up-to-date information explained in such an intelligible way. Compared to other books dealing with manufacturing processes (which are mostly written by scientists in a very, very scientific way), in this book you've got the impression that the author virtually tells you the modern fundamentals of manufacturing. This makes this book easily understandable. Nowadays, High Speed Machining is well established in manufacturing. The future will bring High Performance Machining which means that the metal removal rates are significantly higher at high cutting speeds. As far as High Performance Cutting is concerned, this book covers also the theories of the dynamic behaviour of the cutting process. Therefore, chatter is of great importance. The author explains the two present "Chatter Theories" in detail and enables the reader to perform his own calculations on process stability. I strongly recommend this book to all engineers and students of mechanical engineering who want to know the latest scientific results explained in a comprehensible way. This book is a must in the bookcase.

This book gives you a good engineering back ground into the understanding of machining and the back ground to start building your own CNC machining center. A must have for any production engineer.

ONE OF THE BEST MANUFACTURING BOOKS OUT THERE

I had the great fortune of taking a course with Dr. Altintas at the University of British Columbia and I have to say that he is very thorough in his teaching methodology.

This was the textbook for the course and we covered most of it... I have to say that the book is very thorough and really teaches you in a practical way. The contents are very up-to-date and full with his own research results (which are cutting-edge). Also, the book's price has been kept very reasonable so that it is "student friendly".
