Another excellent, 174 pages of "The Simpsons." Some of these comics are better than their later episodes. This book includes appearances by some less frequent characters like Doctor Nick, Homer's former psychotic boss Hank Scorpio, Luann Van Houten's boyfriend Pyro, Dr. Colossus, and even Waylon Smithers's favorite 8 1/2-incher...Malibu Stacy!

"Judge Marge"--Marge becomes a T.V. judge and her frequent absence causes her household to fall apart. I like the part where Lisa goes on a power trip after she starts wearing a monocle.
"Stacy's Busy Day!"--A comic short for Malibu Stacy! I love it! Let's have more of these! Malibu Stacy shows off some of her many careers and identities (my favorites are "KISS Army Stacy" and "Cosmetic Surgery Stacy"). There are also fan letters, one from a fan who Stacy thinks is a "sharp-eyed little girl" with "an unusual and charming name," Waylon Smithers.
"Viva Bart"--In a Duff Beer contest, Homer wins two weeks in Bosqueverde--a tropical paradise that has been in a state of perpetual civil war for the past thirty years.
"Beauty School Hellcats"--After Selma makes an effort to make DMV customers actually look good in their driver's license photos, she and Patty are given a vacation to beauty school to get rid of her creative impulses.

"Cruisin' for a Bruisin'"--After ruining his and Marge's cruise by giving booze to a recovering alcoholic dolphin, Homer takes Mr. Burns's discarded yacht to start his own cruise line, with some familiar Springfield couples as guests. Hank Scorpio appears at the end in a strip unrelated to this story (he's not one of my favorite characters).
"Crime Family Practice"--Short comic featuring Dr. Nick who is kidnapped to give medical treatment to the mob.
"Growing Pains"--Bart gets involved in a seed-selling scam, so The Simpsons put on a Seed Fair which includes a fashion report by Joan Rivers and her daughter. However, Mr. Burns, who's allergic to growing things (makes sense), may have the last say.
"The Abominable Dr. Colossus"--Dr. Colossus fans will like this book because he also appears in "Judge Marge." In this short, despite attempts at being evil and menacing, Dr. Colossus is seen as a lovable buffoon in Springfield.

"Merchants of Vengeance"--A wave of shoplifting plagues Springfield and shopkeepers Ned Flanders, Apu, and the comic Book Guy ban together to fight it. Comic Book Guy loves the crime-fighting group so much, he can't let it go even when the shoplifting stops. Comic Book Guy actually shows some emotion tearing up in one box.
"In Burns We Trust"--Mr. Burns takes over Rev. Lovejoy's church in his endless quest for more power. Meanwhile, Ned Flanders looks for a new church.
"How Marge Got Her Curtains Back"--In this short, Marge's curtains go down the garbage disposal and she's having a hard time finding that classic corncob pattern.

This book sucks. Bringing back loken

This book sucks. Bringing back loken, why? One of the great things about the hours heresy was that any character could die at anytime. His death was a great moment in the series. Two many characters and no really no story telling of him going into the warp and becoming a demon lord. Worst Graham Mcneil book I've ever read.

About the Author

Jonathan Corbet got his first look at the BSD Unix source back in 1981, when an instructor at the University of Colorado let him "fix" the paging algorithm. He has been digging around inside every system he could get his hands on ever since, working on drivers for VAX, Sun, Ardent, and x86 systems on the way. He got his first Linux system in 1993, and has never looked back. Mr. Corbet is currently the co-founder and executive editor of Linux Weekly News (http://LWN.net/); he lives in Boulder, Colorado with his wife and two children.

Alessandro installed Linux 0.99.14 soon after getting his degree as electronic engineer. He then received a Ph.D. in computer science at the University of Pavia despite his aversion toward modern technology. He left the University after getting his Ph.D. because he didn't want to write articles. He now works as a free lancer writing device drivers and, um...articles. He used to be a young hacker before his babies were born; he's now an old advocate of Free Software who developed a bias for non-PC computer platforms.

Greg Kroah-Hartman has been writing Linux kernel drivers since 1999, and is currently the maintainer for the USB, PCI, I2C, driver core, and sysfs kernel subsystems. He is also the maintainer of the udev and hotplug userspace programs, as well as being a Gentoo kernel maintainer, ensuring that his email inbox is never empty. He is a contributing editor to Linux Journal Magazine, and works for IBM's Linux Technology Center, doing various Linux kernel related tasks.

3rd edition is somewhat outdated by now, needs to be updated

I bought this book specifically to learn how to write a block device driver for CentOS 6.3 / RHEL 6.3

Alas, Linux has moved on since the 3rd edition was printed (2009) and kernel functions used in the example code, like elv_next_request(), or macros like blk_fs_request(), have since been *removed* from Linux, rendering this book somewhat obsolete.

For my driver, I need worker threads, and these can be implemented by means of workqueues.
Workqueues are a very important tool for the driver writer - basically, they are the kernel equivalent of user-space pthreads. If you want your driver to do things in parallel, you pretty much have to use workqueues.
Unfortunately, while there is a section on workqueues in this book, this section is rather short - just a few pages long.

All in all, this book did not meet my expectations.

Highly Overrated, but the only text on the market.

Honestly, I really don't understand how anyone can give this book 5 stars. To start off on a positive tone, I'll say what I liked about it.

1) Lots of information. There is no denying this, it is very informitive. However, this is a double edged swords (will discuss later)

2) The basic drivers are described pretty well. The scull driver is a good way to ease into driver development, imo. Simple enough that it's not too overwhelming and ununderstandable, but not overly simple so that you actually get an idea of what's going on.

3) It's free.

That's it for the positives. Now for a huge list of negatives.

1) Most of the information is irrelevent. I feel like the authors lost focus as the book went on, and forgot they were not writing a general "Linux Kernel" book but a specific book for drivers. Many a time do they spend pages upon pages going on about something, only to mention "but this is never used by read driver developers" at the end. You end up in a really unpleasant situation where you have to sift through a bunch of useless info to get to the useful stuff. Most of the time I ended up just searching google, and got better results.

2) Lack of more complex examples. Let's face it, no one needs to write an extremely simple char driver. However, that's as complex as the examples get. Beyond the scull driver, it's just code fragments. I sincerely hope you don't have to write a serial tty device. Which leads me to my next point.

3) Outdated. Many kernel API changes have been made to the point where the code is no longer compilable (especially on the tty front). Methods used in the book have been done away with in the newer kernel API's.

Honestly, you're much better off just resorting to Google. If you want to write your own driver and you read through this book, you'll still have no idea where to start. The functions in the scull driver are well-described, but that's it. The authors use too much space writing about useless crap you really don't care about, and this comes at the expense of useful info
that will actually help you write drivers.

This book will probably come up on your google searches, and it might be worth it to skim the regular chapters. Honestly though, it's not going to tell you anything your other search results won't. This is most definitely not the "end all, be all" of writing linux drivers, it just happens to be the only one.

Possibly still the best book on the subject

Even though the third edition is showing its age - it covers kernel version 2.6.10, which is terribly old - in my opinion this is still the best book on the subject.

Generally, it is not possible to create an up to date tutorial for programming the Linux kernel, since it changes constantly. SO, the key is to introduce the reader to the way of thinking necessary in order to understand and develop for the kernel. I think this book succeeds marvelously.

This book is great. It is the most gentle and most practical ...

This book is great. It is the most gentle and most practical introduction to functional programming that I have come across.

I previously looked at the O'reilly book with a similar title but I found that the dependence on an external library(underscore.js) was practical but not instructive in getting my mind around the functional programming paradigm.

The best chapter in my opinion is chapter 2. It lays a lot of the groundwork for 'functional thinking' and has the most efficient discussion of recursion as a programming paradigm. If you plan on skimming through the book, be sure to look at this chapter..The author also subtly reinforces functional thinking with well-placed phrases like: ".... maintaining a stack through iteration is not very functional".

I think this book could have been written in Ruby and would still be as effective for establishing a functional mindset. However, the choice of Javascript as the vehicle of instruction is well timed because as most people know, Javascript is eating the world right now.

Highly Readable Book About JavaScript and Functional Programming

This is a well-written book about JavaScript - not an easy task in my mind. The explanations of the components that make up functional programming are very clear and use simple examples. The example explaining closures made me grasp this staple functional feature more than any I had read before. I "got it", which makes me really appreciate this book and it's author. I've read other explanations, but this one clicked with me.

Also, relations are pointed out between functional features that make it easy to see how some aspects of functional programming enable other aspects. For instance, pure functions enable lazy evaluation. With this explanatory approach I was able to grasp the whole and not just the individual parts. Up to this point, I've always seen functional programming as just a series of techniques without seeing the relations between these techniques and without seeing the full power and possibilities, but now I think I'm beginning to see it more holistically.

The author also provides a framework for understanding functional libraries that extend javascript’s functional core. It always seemed to be confusing to me how there were so many libraries and I was always wondering which to learn and why. This framework is good for understanding not just current libraries but future libraries as well.

The book is written in a clear and concise way and also with a sort of conversational tone that makes it quite readable. In other words, it doesn't bore you with what could potentially be a dry topic. I don't think programming, functional or otherwise, is boring, but from my experience, it is all too easy to write a book on a specific language or technology that ends up being a dry listing of the features of the technology with examples that have little imagination and shed little light on how to incorporate these features into a picture of the whole. This book mostly avoids falling into this trap.

Overall, this book helped me to read functional code with a proficiency approaching the way I already read object-oriented code. It just came more naturally afterwards. I highly recommend this book to those trying to grasp some of the trickier parts of functional programming or for those coming from a strong object-oriented background, but without much exposure to functional programming. JavaScript ties these two paradigms together, so if you want to use it to its full effect, then you need to understand both paradigms and how they can be combined. The book helped me greatly with this understanding.

The book also covers some more advanced topics, such as category theory and some pitfalls of JavaScript, and these explanations were also enlightening in deepening my understanding of functional programming and JavaScript..

I think "JavaScript: the Good Parts" (a well-known book about JavaScript) is in some ways a more advanced and thorough treatment of the language (and probably for this reason, it gets a bit tedious at times). I probably should have read this book first before reading that book, as it would have made it easier to grasp. But anyway, I may now be able to go back to that book and get more out of it this time, given that I have a firmer
foundation of understanding laid down through reading this book. Also, I may enjoy the snarky tone of that book a little bit more than I did before, now that I understand better why Douglas Crockford is being snarky in the first place.

Bottom line: I really wasn't expecting anything in particular from this book, and I wasn't even looking forward to reading it. I thought it would be just more words about JavaScript that would continue to make me hate JavaScript, but it changed my mind one page at a time. Before this book, reading about JavaScript would make me feel alternately bored or frustrated, like those who understood JavaScript and functional programming were part of some secret special club that I could not be a member of, but the tone and content of this book have now made me feel excited about the potential of what I can accomplish with this language going forward.

Excellent Javascript Book to Bring You to the Next Level

I am currently running a “Javascript phase” where I read books or watch a lot of videos about Javascript as I have discovered that Javascript is a powerful and very useful language to learn and it is my language of choice, at the moment. If you know Javascript, you can do Web Development and Mobile Development using the same language. Within Web Development and/or Mobile Development using Javascript, you can use 2 different styles of programming to achieve your goal of creating/developing your final product: 1.) Functional Programming (which is in the title of this book) and 2.) Object Oriented Programming (which is actually part of the content of the book).

This book for me is AWESOME as it delivers more than what you would expect from a book with a title of “Functional Programming in Javascript” as the author not only discusses and teaches how to program in a Functional Programming style using Javascript, but it also teaches how to use Javascript to program in a Object-Oriented style. Therefore no one style is neglected. This book, however, is still faithful to its Title as it goes in-depth in terms of learning Functional Programming using the Javascript language. It goes in-depth in Functional Programming by first introducing the different ‘moving parts’, ‘building blocks’ and ‘tools’ used for Functional Programming and then how to put everything together akin to understanding a machine by first dissecting it and understanding what each part does and then reassembling it to produce the final product again in order to further one’s understanding of the machine and its different parts.

The book also talks about the pitfalls of Javascript and some more Advanced Topics within Javascript. The approach is highly practical and yet it does not forget to acknowledge the academic basis of Functional Programming in Mathematics. Therefore a section of the book was dedicated to briefly talk about Category Theory. A section I appreciate even though I don’t really know Category Theory. But at least the awareness of Functional Programming being born out of Mathematics was mentioned for suitable readers to appreciate.

Other things you will learn from this book are Design Patterns and some recommendation of Libraries to use to help in Functional Programming so that you will not have to program these yourself.

In short, this is a very good book to learn the strengths, weaknesses and different applications of Javascript.
