About the Author
John S. Townsend is the Susan and Bruce Worster Professor of Physics at Harvey Mudd College, the science and engineering college of the Claremont Colleges. He received his B.S. from Duke University, his Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University, and was a National Science Foundation Graduate Fellow. He has been a visiting professor at Caltech, the University of Southampton in England, Duke University and Swarthmore College, and he was a Science Fellow at the Center for International Security and Arms Control at Stanford University. He loves teaching, especially quantum physics. Townsend is also the author of A Modern Approach to Quantum Mechanics.

I don't know what book the other reviewers read...

I used this book in a sophomore modern physics course. The book is an excellent introduction to modern physics and quantum mechanics. It eschews bra-ket notation and a more common historical approach for an intuition-based approach developed in the first chapter (the quantum nature of light) and continued throughout. The book, overall, emphasizes a qualitative as well as quantitative understanding of physical phenomena, providing an excellent foundation for a junior-level intermediate quantum mechanics course. Although occasionally chatty in tone, the book originates from the author's lecture notes from teaching the course, and as a result the sections are in bite-sized pieces. The occasional chattiness does not get in the way of rigorous derivations, though. I would strongly recommend this book to sophomore level physics students; its level is too elementary for a junior level course, but it serves as an intuitive introduction to the subject.

Great book for introductory course!

This book is not quite like all the other introductory quantum physics books out there. I have been reading and trying to look for a textbook to learn Quantum physics, and this is it. Upon reading reviews of other books on amazon I came across a comment (the reviewer was talking about Richard L. Liboff's book) that summarizes the consensus of all other quantum textbooks in the market:

"Not a great text for a course, but then again.... what quantum text *is* a good book for a quantum course?"

I believe that this textbook (which is relatively new in the market) is a GREAT book for a quantum course. As the title suggest, it truly does have a "fundamental approach" to the world of quantum physics, more so when compared to all other introductory quantum books.

In the end, you should really give Townsend's book a chance! This book might not surpass Liboff's or Grifith's when it comes to being used as a raw "reference" text, but I can say with a high degree of confidence that there is no better book to teach undergraduates what quantum is all about.

I would not be surprised if it becomes the most popular introductory quantum textbook for physics undergraduates!

PS: I also appreciate the price tag that the author has set. It really feels like Townsend wrote the book to teach students and for his passion on the subject, rather than for making money off undergraduates.

Vague, Uninteresting

I believe that a student could probably go from an introductory physics course (which nowadays should touch on the basics of modern physics anyways) straight to Townsend's more advanced Quantum Mechanics book and not lose anything. For that reason, I am not sure why he wrote this text. The exposition strives to be clear, but the details are so obscured that that it was very unsatisfying to endure.

But I did appreciate that it was a "modern" modern physics text---my university used the similar McIntyre book for Quantum Mechanics and I enjoyed it very much.
A major difference was that in the latter bra-ket notation was introduced immediately which was delightfully more simple than the vague verbal approach.
The concreteness of the linear algebraic computations immediately gave the students a sense of learning something new and of computational ability in the subject.
And throughout, the mathematical justification of the physics was much more rewarding.

In all, this the least interesting physic text I have used, and I wish I could have skipped the course that used it.

A Beautiful Magic Trick of a Book

Santopietro's book is a deeply moving magic trick. Heartfelt memoir, great scholarship, delicious Hollywood dish all at once. I finished the final chapter in tears wondering how in the world he'd manged to weave such a beautiful story. Not only does he take us on a dramatic journey through the making of the Godfather films, he also offers us his heart. His own journey to rediscover and reclaim his Italian American Identity. To honor the scrappy passionate ancestors who paved the way in this chaotic new land. This is a smart and moving story of a man finding his place in the world, his love for this immigrant country of ours. Simply a great read.

Here's a Book You Can't Refuse

I just finished this book and wanted to write about it. I thoroughly enjoyed it. It's a look at the Godfather films , with interesting facts about each one, but it's really the story of the author's family, themselves immigrants from Italy, interspersed with how their lives correspond with the Corleones. It's touching to read about their early life and how they came to America looking for something that may not even exist anymore and it makes one lament that fact.

In between stories about his family, there are critiques and comments about all of the Godfather films. What I enjoyed was the great comments about Part III, a much maligned film. Yes, GIII has flaws, some fatal, but it is an intelligent film and there are many aspects of it that fit into the Saga. Santopietro breaks it all down and puts it in a great perspective.

Fans of the Saga will enjoy this book immensely and, as a true Godfather fan, I recommend it.

I am sad to say I have also recently learnt that the ...

If this book had stayed as historical fiction as first intended it would not get this rating. Unfortunately it was changed to historical non fiction. I am an ex Rhodesian and also served in the Rhodesian Air Force during this time. After reading this book the main thing that stood out for me was why were we the Rhodesian public not told that the gangs responsible had been killed. A cover up is the reason given however I find this very hard to believe - we were a small nation and it would have come out before now. There is now a lot of information, rebuttals etc out there and each day there appears to be more evidence pointing to the fact that what was written is fiction. I am sad to say I have also recently learnt that the author was nowhere near the area at the time of the second downing as he had been replaced in the SFA before then by someone else.For the sake of the relatives of those on board both planes it would have been nice if this story, as told, was true but alas it appears we have all been misled. Such a sad state of affairs.

Sadly untrue

This book started out as fiction and then a very poor attempt was made to turn it into fact. It should have stayed as fiction because apart from the actual shooting down of the Viscounts and some names mentioned I believe that very little of the rest is factual at all. Sadly some of the family members of those that perished in the two tragedies were led to believe that this book was the true and complete account and that it would give them some sort of closure. Nell uses the SAS emblem on his book but as of today 30 May 2015 I have learnt that his parent unit C Squadron SAS have distanced themselves from the book and Nell himself.

Fact and Fiction

Given all the controversy surrounding this book I felt that I should at least read it in order to understand first-hand what Nell had written. As a piece of literature it is not going to win any Pulitzer prizes. Having been personally involved in the Rhodesian War from 1977 onwards, any story from that time is of personal interest to me and I have read many books written about that period. I started reading the book with an open mind and prepared to give Nell the benefit of the doubt. Having finished the book my final impression is that the story, as told by Nell, is very unlikely. I certainly don’t believe it to be the “True” story of the Viscount disasters. It is more akin to what we used to call a “War’ie” (sp?) (an inflated war story – usually with the teller as the hero). Perhaps the years, and much re-telling of the events, have blunted Nell's memory. As pointed out above, I made the decision to buy the book because I wanted to read first-hand what Nell had written. If I had purchased it in order to get “the complete story of the Viscount disasters” I would certainly be feeling ripped off.

My name is Collin Christine McShirley. I ate emotionally for many years. I didn’t always know I was an emotional eater until I received training to be able to identify it. I have a master’s degree in clinical psychology and am certified by the Centre for Eating and Dieting Disorders, and Healthy Aging from Boston University. I believe love heals. Learning to love myself and examining the reasons behind why I was overeating is what helped me heal. I know how you feel because I have personally been there. Change in perspective

This journal really helped me examine my eating habits. Tuning into the why-what-when-where of my eating made it so I could identify my emotions connected. Using this guide and the positivity and supported provided by the author really felt like she was on my team and I was able to lose weight in a healthy way. I am currently doing the Authentic Eating Program and working with Collin McShirley. Her program has helped me lose 10lbs and has changed the way I look at food. I highly recommend this program for anyone struggling with weight loss. The journal keeps me on track while I do the program. I really enjoy the motivational quotes on each page. It helps me feel inspired to keep trying.

Raymond Ruddon's book may be ten years past publication, but it is the first book I would recommend for a person seeking a reliable overview of the basic nature of cancer and cancer research. Ruddon gives an easily readable account of the history of cancer biology, emphasising the mechanics and characteristics of many forms of cancer and cancerous stages. The clarity of his discussion engages the reader. I wish that he would be willing to rewrite a new edition, because I know of no other single volume that describes the issues of cancer research so well and cogently for the student and interested layperson.
