From Publishers Weekly
Author Butcher is the creator of the Dresden Files series of novels (the basis for the short-lived Sci-Fi channel series), and this fun graphic novel is the prequel to his first Dresden book, Storm Front. Blurring the lines between fantasy and noir, Dresden is a scrappy, rough-and-tumble consulting professional wizard who's often hired by the Chicago police to work on those crimes that enter the supernatural. Given only 24 hours to solve an inexplicable and gruesome murder at the zoo, Dresden has to deal with unhelpful zoologists and police, a helpful but confused potential love interest, packs of demonically possessed animals and several deadly enchanters along the way, eventually uncovering a plot by one of mankind's great ancient foes. If the story is not particularly deep, it's breathlessly paced, with plenty of quirks and details (one of Dresden's closest friends and allies is an ancient talking skull), and a compelling page-turner. Syaf's art is always effective, but sometimes ping-pongs between generic action-comic combat poses and more personal and evocative horror art. This book is a decent start to a new medium for the series and may pique the interest of those unfamiliar with Dresden and Butcher. (Oct.)

Introduction by Jim Butcher

I know The Dresden Files got a lot of people’s attention when it aired on the Sci-Fi Channel, but there’s a secret I’ve been needing to get off my chest: In my head, it’s always been an animated cartoon. In fact, when I’m writing it, I actually see panels from a comic book–sorry, graphic novel–in my mind’s eye.

So when the Dabel Brothers came along and expressed an interest in adapting the books to a graphic novel format, I couldn’t have been happier.

See, back in the day (when you just called them "comic books" and "graphic novels" wouldn’t really come into common use until the release of Frank Miller’s Batman: The Dark Knight Returns in 1986), I collected a lot of titles. In point of fact, from 1983 to 1986, I collected every single Marvel title with the exception of the overtly marketed toy tie-in titles (Transformers, GI Joe) and those less-than-successful "New Universe" titles.

Yeah. All of them.

I stopped looking up the value of all those titles about a quarter of the way in. It was too depressing. My mom threw 99 percent of them away when I was off at college. Not that I would have sold them, anyway. Money might be money, but what I loved were the stories; the heroes, the villains, the victims, the explosions, desperate battles, heroic sacrifice–the stuff of legends. At least, they were to that 12- to 15-year-old boy. Those comic books–they were NOT graphic novels back then–stirred my imagination and deeply influenced the kinds of stories I would write myself one day.

So when the Dabels offered me the chance to write an original story in the Dresden Files, as an introduction for the adaptation of the novels, I jumped at the chance! Ah hah! I’d gotten to write a Spider-Man novel for Marvel, but this was going to be even better!

Nobody told me how much *work* it would be.

I mean, a picture is worth a thousand words, right? Well, there are between one and six pictures on every single page of a graphic novel, and when you’re the writer, you’re the one who has to produce the thousand words. You’ve got to tell the artist what you want on the page, give him some idea of perspective, of mood and tone, and generally give him a good notional skeleton to draw the sketches on. When you’re a noob writer for this format, like me, you also have to work out when you’re asking for the impossible and when you’re telling the artist everything he doesn’t need to know, and nothing that he does.

It’s intense. In its own way, it’s harder than writing a novel.

I’m really proud of the results.

"Welcome to the Jungle" is a story set in the world of the Dresden Files, immediately prior to the events of Storm Front. Drawn by the tremendously gifted newcomer Ardian Syaf, I can honestly say that the representation of the characters found here is very, very close to the images of them that exist in my head. Harry is bang-on, in particular, and I just keep getting more impressed with the art being produced to go with the story I’ve written. Put together, I think they make for a fine comic book.

I don’t think I’ll apologize for that one. Comic books opened up a whole universe of imagination to a kid who rushed to the local comic shop each week, eager to buy issues for seventy-five cents to one dollar apiece. Comic books helped awaken my own desire to tell stories, and played a pivotal role in shaping my own storytelling style. I see no slur in the name, no disrespect, and never have.

Even so, I can respect the opinions of others. So welcome to the first issue of the first original Dresden Files graphic novel–"Welcome to the Jungle."

Enjoy.

Another quality entry in the Dresden Files
By Timothy Fitzgerald
First, I'd like to address some of these more negative reviews.

Yes, it is a comic book, not a novel. But the idea that Amazon "hoodwinked" anyone is ridiculous. The book has listings of its sales ranks and has for a while, and it is listed under "graphic novels". Additionally, it has TWO authors listed, not just Butcher, and the picture used to advertise the product has it clearly depicted at the bottom "ILLUSTRATED BY..."

So you whiners who think Amazon pulled one over on you are just too lazy or stupid to read the product description.

Additionally, this is a PREQUEL, so people whining about this and that not looking right or not addressing larger issues brought up later in the series, it is as it should be based on his Pre-Stormfront days.

It is also funny people whining about how it looks, maybe Butcher is just a liar and he writes forwards to sell his product, but according to his own introduction to the book, much of what is depicted is close to how HE sees it in his mind. So he seems to like it and being that he created the characters that is good enough for me.

It is a joke to say that "comics are for kids and books are for adults". Come on, the Dresden Files is good, but it isn't as if you have to be above the age of 10 to read and enjoy them, and Harry Dresden (and Jim Butcher) are comic fans (Butcher himself even says he has always seen the Dresden Files as an Animated Cartoon) so Harry translates well to the medium.

As to the product itself: I found it a thoroughly enjoyable Dresden Files mini-adventure. It is 132 Illustrated pages detailing a Dresden adventure just prior to the start of Stormfront.

It has all the fun and action that you expect from a Dresden Files story, just on a slightly smaller scale, more in line with the early books than the later "heavier" fare. I like the art for the most part, there are some complaints with how the illustrator draws his women, they just don't seem as attractive as they should. The guy has a real Steve Dillion style, and I think faces are his weakest point, everything else looks really good.

Even with the illustrations, there is a LOT of text for a comic book, so the story still is comparable in length to a long short story.

In all it is worthwhile, especially considering individual issues cost $4 and you can get it all hardback for $12. At the very least it is a nice little Dresden snack that, combined with Backup, will take the edge off the wait for Turn Coat.

Not just that, but Dresden quotes from Big Trouble In Little China, it doesn't get any better than that!

An Answer to Complaints
By J. Hanses
I wasn't going to write a review for this book originally, but seeing the pile of unfair negative reviews, I thought I'd add my two cents to bring the rating back up.

The primary complaint people seem to have is that this is a graphic novel. Yes, readers, this book really is a graphic novel compilation of an original 4 issue comic series by Jim Butcher. If you don't like graphic novels, don't buy it. And if you categorically don't like graphic novels, please stop reviewing it. I hate rap. I don't write reviews on rap music. I would be horribly biased and wouldn't know what I was talking about. Any item should be evaluated on its own terms, not based on flaws with the company selling it. If you feel you were misled, then return the product.

Complaint number two seems to be that the book has no ties to the current Dresden Files plot lines. This book is a prequal. It is set before the beginning of the series. Butcher did it as a side project for a bit of a break, he hasn't forgotten his current plotline. As a prequal, the book stands well on its own, and introduces the characters of Harry, Murphy, and Bob reasonably well. The story is tightly contained, and the only possible flaw is that Harry & Murphy's relationship seems better than it was in the first few books where she was always arresting him for something.

The illustrations are beautiful. I'm not fond of the cover art, but that's not the style used on the interior, which is more lush and less photoshop-ish. I have one small problem with the artist representations in that Harry is drawn too short and Murphy is drawn too tall. This is most noticible when they're in the same frame together. Murph is 1-1/2 feet shorter than Harry, but in the comic she's as tall as his shoulder, about 1/2 foot shorter than he is. I suspect the artist tinkered with the heights so that he could fit Harry & Murphy's faces together in the comic frames more often, but it can be irritating to know Harry is an almost freakishly tall 6 foot 9, but in the book he is merely tall. I would suggest the artist pick up Back to the Future and study how the movie managed to fit the small Michael Fox and tall Christopher Lloyd in the same scenes together.

Butcher has a nice intro to the book, talking about his love for comics, and he clearly learned well from them. The number of narrative boxes is high, but somehow the story still flows and they don't overwhelm the pictures. The end result has me considering purchasing Storm Front's graphic novel version despite already owning the standard novel. If nothing else, it makes me hope he'll write a graphic prequal to book 3.

Extras!: Yes, there's additional stuff in this book. The standard and varient covers are included, as are some concept art and writer's notes on the characters. And of course there's the lovely introduction/homage to comics.

The book is worth it if you're a Dresden fan. It's high quality, beautiful, and fun.

It's a jungle out there
By EA Solinas
"Like any jungle, it is a world of predators and prey. Some of the most dangerous creatures in the world live here. Very few of them are in cages..."

Having appeared in bestselling books and on TV, detective/wizard Harry Dresden now has his own comic book series, the four-part "Welcome To the Jungle". And it loses nothing in translation -- author Jim Butcher wonderfully preserves the sharp, witty, literate fantasy-noir flavour of his books, which is brought to colorful life with Ardian Syaf's solid artwork. This is one to keep an eye on.

A mangled corpse is found outside the monkey house, but the facts don't add to the "gorilla attack" the city wants. So Murphy calls in Harry Dresden (who was killing a Rawhead and Bloody Bones), and after casting a spell to see what killed the man, Harry knows it definitely wasn't a gorilla, especially since the man filled his opponent with bullets before dying.

Unfortunately Harry only has twenty-four hours to find the culprit. And as he starts poking around the gorilla house, he and nervy zookeeper Wil are attacked by bespelled jungle cats, and later by the Big Bad Black Spectral Dog. Harry suspects the mysterious Dr. Watson, but has no idea of her true plans -- or her true monstrous nature.

I'll give it to Jim Butcher -- not only can the man pen two vastly different series and assorted short stories, but he can turn out a pretty thrilling graphic novel prequel. Though "Welcome to the Jungle" is a short work, it's still crammed with action, monsters, magic, and a unique new supernatural threat that Harry alone can deal with. Basically, what one expects of the Dresden Files.

The plot is a pretty straightforward one, and most of the first quarter involves Harry poking around at the zoo. But soon it speeds up as Butcher introduces lots of splattered blood, glowy eyes, monstrous hags, and some solid action scenes involving train tracks, car chases and flying boulders. By the time Harry rushes into the underground lair (complete with bubbling cauldron), Butcher is officially on an action-packed roll.

Since this is Jim Butcher, there's a hefty dose of humor (Harry getting whacked in the head with a notebook, or chatting with a lecherous talking skull), and also some wonderfully snappy dialogue ("I've taken your staff. I've taken your rod." "You should have taken my gun"). But there are also moments of poignancy, such as Harry recognizing the accused gorilla's grief over his human friend's death.

And Ardian Syaf does a simply lovely job with this book's art. Lots of shadows, blurry corners and just enough gritty fantasy realism -- one stunning image portrays the hags as hooded clawed creatures reaching to a blood-tinted moon. Harry is the tall, rangy, stubbly guy you'd expect, and though Murphy doesn't look quite as "cute" as you'd expect, she's a convincing hard-edged cop.

Butcher's anti-hero is no stereotypical wizard -- he's rough, a little sarcastic, and just trying to make the rent with his magical powers. And in the story's quieter moments, we get to see how Harry became such a cynical loner. And on the ordinary-people front, Wil... acts the way you'd expect an ordinary gal suddenly confronted by magic fire and evil hags to act.

"The Dresden Files: Welcome to the Jungle" is a primo example of what graphic novel spinoffs should be -- fast, sharp and action-packed. Definitely a good read.

Review
"Brown analyzes prejudice from one viewpoint, the psychological, but with a variety of perspectives including personality, developmental, and applied. This reviewer was particularly pleased with the emphasis placed on both the social aspects of prejudice and its developmental nature. Brown's chapter 'Prejudiced Individuals' was compelling because of equal coverage given to the feasibility of such a concept and an open-eyed exploration of its limitations. Readers who are interested in that role that 'self' may play in the process of developing and maintaining prejudicial views will find chapter 6 of particular note. The most significant aspect of this work, however, does not come until the end. In the final chapters, Brown critically addresses the questions of whether prejudice is truly declining and the heretofore elusive challenge of how one can reduce it ... a balanced analysis of the social-psychological roots of the past, present, and future of prejudice. Recommended for upper-division undergraduate, graduate, and faculty readers." Choice

‘Following in the tradition of Gordon Allport and Henri Tajfel, Rupert Brown presents a cogent analysis of prejudice as a central social psychological phenomenon. He takes the reader on an organized journey through the literature on stereotyping, social categorization, and intergroup relations. Brown’s writing is both intelligent and accessible, and his examples are well chosen.’ – Professor Kay Deaux, City University of New York

‘Rupert Brown – one of the foremost social-psychological scholars of intergroup relations – has provided a wonderful, up-to-date alterative to Gordon Allport’s (1954) classic, The Nature of Prejudice. Like Allport, Brown writes with enviable clarity and renders even the most complex ideas accessible. Responding to the burgeoning research since Allport, Brown’s book deals with all the key issues – including social cartegorization, stereotyping, modern forms of racism and , for me, the burning question of how prejudice might be reduced. His book will both interest researchers and delight students, as it deserves to do.’ – Professor Miles Hewstone, University of Wales College of Cardiff

‘The material is impressive and up-to-date. There is nothing dogmatic about this book: each approach is presented in a fair and critical fashion. Students will get an accurate view of what social psychologists know about prejudice. When this is done with such talent, what more can one ask for? –Professor Jacques-Philippe Leyens, Catholic University of Lowvain

From the Back Cover
Prejudice is one of the most enduring and widespread social problems facing the world today. This book tackles prejudice from a social psychological perspective, and contributes to both its understanding and its reduction. Throughout the book readers are introduced to the major theoretical and empirical achievements in the field in a lively and interesting fashion. The author emphasizes the social nature of prejudice, viewing the phenomenon primarily as an intergroup phenomenon, one rooted in particular societal settings and shared amongst the members of different groups in those settings. Both classic and contemporary research is presented and illustrates, and the book includes many examples from contemporary life and different kinds of prejudice. Each chapter also concludes with a summary of the main points, together with suggestions for further reading. Rupert Brown’s new book will be welcomed by both teachers and their students as a balanced and readable introduction to this important topic.

About the Author
Rupert Brown is Professor of Social Psychology at the University of Kent where he has taught courses on group and intergroup processes for seventeen years. He has published widely in the field of intergroup relations, and his earlier books include Group Processes (1988), and Contact and Conflict in Intergroup Encounters (with Miles Hewstone, 1986).

A Collection of Insights does not a theory make ...
By Herbert L Calhoun
This very scholarly work of updated insights, building on the pioneering and seminal work of Gordon Allport ("The Nature of Prejudice," 1954), rightly deserves all the accolades it has received. Like Allport's book, this one too is clearly written, thorough, coherent, and filled with precise illustrative examples that prove the author's main point (and the rule): that prejudice, in all its many aspects, is still alive and well.

On page 2, the author's self-description of this, his own work, is that of being a "collection of insights." I would more accurately call them a "recalled collection" of, or, "updated collection" of insights. And as important as these recalled insights are, taken together, they are just a further fleshing-in of details that we already know about. And with one exception to be discussed subsequently, they do not in any way break any new ground, nor, more importantly, do they constitute even as much as a proto-theory -- not to mention a full-blown theory -- of prejudice.

And thus even though I like this book as much as I did the one by Allport, I was very disappointed with its hidden thesis because I believe that anyone who has studied issues of prejudice, racism and discrimination as long and as hard as this author obviously has, knows that all roads inevitably do indeed lead back to social psychology. However, that said, once he has arrived at the gates of social psychology, it is not enough to just stand outside the gate with a megaphone and pontificate from on high. I think at the very least it is incumbent upon such an individual to then "kick the gate in; go inside, look around, and see what is actually inside this black box, and how a theory can then be fashioned from what is found inside. " In my view, it is the author's solemn duty to get inside that social-psychological black box and see what is in there that really makes the notions of prejudice tick? Once inside, the devil then does indeed lie in the proverbial details.

And thus, with all due respect to the author for what is clearly a fine piece of work here, I do not believe that he has even attempted to knock the gate in. Is it that he is too self-satisfied with just being able to stand outside the gate with his megaphone reciting the litany of things we already know about prejudice? It is almost as if he believes that the "Allport-Brown perspective" of "recollected insights on prejudice" is in itself sufficient as "stand-in" for "settled theory?" But I am here to tell them both, that it is not so. The author's (and by inference, Allport's) collection and recollection of insights is not the end, or even the beginning of the end, but is indeed just the beginning of a narrow pathway that should eventually lead to a sound theory of prejudice. In short, it is not enough to just suggest in grand style as the author has done here that prejudice is a universal phenomenon. In fact, once that is said the game is already up, isn't it? Once prejudice has been universalized by divine assertion, there is nothing else left to be said about it, right? Its "check" and "mate:" No longer is there any need to look for responsible parties, or to assign blame, perpetrators have no return addresses: We are all equally complicit in it, right?

Everything then neatly evaporates into the ether of inchoate references to the "human condition." Once prejudice is covered under (and covered up by) the laws of being universal and thus a part of the human condition, it carries with it the unearned authority of being final settled but forever implied theory, implied theory that will always remain in the halfway house of assertions and insinuations that are nowhere ever fully explicated and that almost never accord with the hard known facts on the ground of the human condition.

The brutal and incorrect backdoor implication, that prejudice is somehow universal becomes its own best self-justification. But the truth is that such assertions are little more than ready excuses and global rationalizations that give all subcultures the permission they need to engage in prejudice without accepting any responsibility for it. By invoking this global umbrella excuse early in the book, the author makes the rest of it an academic exercise about how best to tie down the other inessential details of this implied global theory?

But in point of fact, I think this backhanded way of theorizing is not the end of the story of prejudice at all. What is wrong with this approach is that all that it does is insinuate an implicit proto-theory of prejudice that cannot be easily tested, one that in the end becomes little more than a global excuse to be deployed by every subculture to justify its own local brand of prejudice. How easy is it to rationalize any prejudice whatsoever if you have as "top cover" the global rationalization that all prejudice is just an incurable part of the universal human condition? The logical corollary to this sweeping hidden and untested axiom of course is that nothing can be done about prejudice. QED

Unfortunately, a book review is not the best place to deploy a full-fledged theory of prejudice, however, this book of insights does give us some hints as to the direction we should be headed if we are to knock down the gates of Social Psychology and get inside its black box. The first and perhaps most important clue is in the compound phrase "Social-Psychology," which in my view should be reversed to be "Psychology-Social," where it then places the proper emphasis on the interactive and dynamic effects between "the psychology of the individual" and "the inhibitions (or lack thereof) that society imposes upon him and his psychology." It is the devil inside these details and their dynamic interplay that is where the "Holy Grail" of prejudice actually lies -- not in a single all-encompassing edict from on high that prejudice is universal, and therefore is the end of the story.

In this regard, I want to respectfully suggest two authors who have indeed "knocked the social psychological gate down. One is Mr. Brown's compatriot, Dr. Robert Young, and especially in chapters 7-9 of his magnum opus "Mental Spaces." And as a second reference, may I also respectfully suggest a careful re-reading of the brilliant Social Psychologist, Eric Fromm's book "Escape from Freedom," especially the Appendix called "Character and Social Process."

Both of these authors push aside the notion of prejudice being just another universal part of the human condition to be tolerated, and actually get into the nitty-gritty of what's inside the social psychological black box that might make this so. And what they find there in the dynamic interplay between the psychology of the individual and the rules of society, is the Holy Grail of prejudice. It is the same as what Freud and Darwin had already found, and what the Christian Bible repeatedly still tells us about in so many indirect ways: that much of human culturally derived prejudice is about simple, primitive, even primordial male fears about the need to maintain rules and walls of sexual exclusivity. It is why Arab women are still wearing Burkas, and why Americans still become uncomfortable when they see a black male holding hands with a white woman.

It is undeniable that these too are part and parcel to the universal human condition, but of quite a different color -- one that in addition to the two authors cited above, also include both Freud and Darwin, and more recently a host of other scholars, who all have recognized that primitive and primordial male sexual fears as being an integral part of the substrate of the human condition that causes prejudice. And true, while this too only knocks down the door, it is not a full theory of prejudice either, but at least it does not stand in the way of making further progress as calling prejudice a universal part of the human condition does. Five stars.

The 231 Club, a CIA true story, encompasses intriguing personalities, an examination of the psyche behind the storyteller, exciting and unique espionage adventures at a time when wits were at play more than gadgets. It dissects how one man with a great career and fulfilling life takes a radical detour which turns his whole world upside down.

J Bartell was an instructor, lecturer and chief of staff of a large California-based therapy institute whose clients included people from all walks of life. But it was his worldwide travels on behalf of affluent clients, including heads-of-state, that put him on the radar of the CIA. What started out as simple courier work eventually led to Bartell becoming part of a small group that handled off-book assignments, meaning no record, so there’s “plausible deniability”.

The CIA covert black ops group consisted of Bartell, his CIA handler Chauncey Holt and former U.S. Marine, Michael Harries, who is best known for having created the famous Harries Flashlight Technique which is used by law enforcement around the world for handling weapons in low-light conditions. Additional support to the group came from master gunsmith Jim Boland and Jeff Cooper, who is considered to be the father of modern combat shooting and tactics.

As a result of Bartell’s increased involvement, a virtual trip down a forbidding rabbit hole, he experiences everything from weapons deals and covert training missions to helping ruthless killers, hiding behind positions of power, get their due.

This CIA memoir informs and excites with true tale CIA black ops assignments.

A Story Worth Telling
By Re
It is rare for me to start a book and read the whole story in one sitting, but I could not put this one down. I was so amazed that a licensed psychotherapist and hypnotherapist, who was so successful at helping people, became a sanctioned assassin, that I purchased a book for myself and a 2nd one for loan. This memoir is a fascinating and probably a very honest account of the author's experiences and how they altered his entire life. I rate this book a 5+++++. It is not only a very action filled story, but it made me look at the fact that the choices that we make in our lives affect our very souls.

Gem of a Page-turner
By Robert Ricciardelli
The "231 Club" is an almost unbelievable story...how could this stuff be true? But, it is a great example of how truth really can be stranger than fiction. The author describes activities and scenes from his past as a CIA black operations contractor; and these stories will make your head shake and your stomach curl. His style is direct, first person and clear as a bell; he was instructed to "take out" these people by the US government in the crazy cold war days, and his team did just that in various countries and in various ways.

On the less serious side, the book is rich in terms of discussion regarding the personal weaponry contract killers used at that time, and any gun/weapon hobbyist might want to read this book for just that alone. Apparently, the members of the 231 Club hit squad spent a lot of time fashioning, tinkering with and range firing their arsenal (as I suppose hit squads might tend to do). The author even puts forth a plausible weapon theory about the Kennedy assassination - one that I had never heard but makes a lot of sense.
All in all, this book is an effortless read and a real gem of a page-turner. If you want a view from a real "spy with a license to kill" then stop watching Bond films and have a read...it will surprise you.

Makes you think!
By Piaras
The 231 Club is well written and I certainly appreciated the author’s voice and the casual style. It also made me think what I would have done if I were in his shoes. Take the safe road and stay in my day job of therapist or take the one going left to the big unknown with plenty of risks along the way?

Fortunately I was in my armchair enjoying the dilemma. All in all, the book is very interesting, both in the author’s background as well as in the various stories he tells of life in the fast lane. The author’s adventures make for very good reading especially when you know they are true tales of CIA exploits. What may have started as high level thinking about the jobs that needed to be done in South America or Latin America during this time period was soon relegated to the people who actually had to carry them out and they often did so with very little resources or help from the upper level “suits”.

This was a very interesting read and I would highly recommend it.

Dizzy, by Nyrae Dawn, Jolene Perry

Dylan doesn’t do relationships. He and his older brother watched their dad go through hell and back, so they made a pact years ago—no girl would come between the Gibson boys. But his brother sells out. He's getting married anyway. To the sister of a chick Dylan met at a party, who's probably the angriest girl he's ever met. Unfortunately, she happens to be hot, too.

Ziah’s life is upside down—her safe boyfriend turns out to be not-so-safe, and now her sister is getting married before college is over to the older brother of a spoiled, party boy who drives her crazy. And also makes her heart beat too fast.

There’s no denying the attraction, but there's also no denying how much they irritate each other. When they’re thrown together as forced wedding planners, they find an ally in each other--neither wants this wedding to happen.

But instead of putting a stop to the crazy nuptials they find themselves at fittings and cake testing. And maybe even…a few dates?
Dizzy is a novel about what happens when two people who are determined not to fall in love, maybe do anyway. Maybe

Dizzy..... Another great author partnership!
By Panglette
At first it seems like it may be a story of opposites attract. He's a rich, party-hard, no-strings-attached hot guy and she's a sorta geeky, pre-med, jeans & T-shirt kinda girl. But once you step inside... it is so so much more.

Dylan has a deep painful scar. Ziah has a fresh just-betrayed wound. Together they should equal a hotmess. But somehow... it's quite the opposite. The angst and battle they have with each other to begin with becomes a beautiful vulnerability that will have you glued to each page, reading as quick as you can. Hoping that they get their junk together and make it work. And what a sweet thing, we as the readers, get to see when they open up and are r.e.a.l. It's a story of 1st loves. That true vulnerability "heart on a platter" feeling that leaves you scared senseless. It's exciting to read.

My favorite part was the laugh out loud lines. Oh and laugh out loud I did. Hard. Being in Dylan's mind is hilarious. Once again Nyrae nailed the male POV.

I loved these two characters and their siblings. I know you will too! Add this to your reading list!

Also, this was very PG. No sex. (I only mention this b/c about 90% of YA I read has sex) While that fact opens it to a much younger audience.... I'm sure even people who've read 50 Shades of Grey would love this book... these characters...this Dylan guy. This book is for anyone of any age. Ok, maybe not for my 1st grader... as she doesn't drop F bombs yet. ;)

I love indie authors. I don't think I can say that enough. Indie authors somehow plow out like 10 books a year. Old school published authors put out one... maybe two books a year. Lame. Indie authors are where it's at. I'm so thankful Nyrae and Jolene put out so many books because it completely supports my reading addiction. Keep writing ladies! Apart and together! You're fabulous!

Nice enough read but for me a bit disappointing
By Book Worm
Dizzy was an enjoyable enough read, but it was lacking that special something that all the other books I have read by Nyrae Dawn have that make me go wow, brilliant YA. And I know what that special something was, special characters. For me, Dizzy was just a typical YA read, likable enough characters, nice smile humour, characters who are able to grow and a lesson to be learned. But there was no stand out character or event that made me think `this is special'. Dizzy is told from the alternating POV of Dylan and Ziah, which is something I ususally love, but in this case I probably could have done without Ziah's.

Dylan was a good ya character, someone who could undergo great change due to his `party boy' ways. He had humour, he had his own moral code, he had a great relationship with his brother, but my issue with him was that he read like all Nyrae's other male characters put together. He did not seem to be his own character, and at time when he was internalizing I thought wow this could have come straight from What a boy wants, or this could have come straight from Charade". Maybe if I had not read, and loved, those books he would have been great. But for me he was a pale imitation.

Ziah on the other hand I found a strange character. She was meant to be super close to her sister but did not even know she had a boyfriend to get engaged too. She was meant to have issues with the engagement, but these where stupid flimsy reasons at best and for someone so close to their sister they made no sense to me. In addition to this it annoyed me how long she took to speak with people about her horrid boyfriend experience. Once Ziah did, and once she stopped having so many issues with the wedding she was fine, but she was just a character, but nothing special.

As for the connection between Dylan and Ziah, I thought this was nicely written and well developed. I loved that there was no instant love, and that they grew to be friends, and then grew to be more. I liked the way they helped each other, listened and didn't try to force any change. The best parts of the book are the scenes where both Dylan and Ziah are in them, they have good banter, and sweet connections. If only more of the book was like that.

Overall I was left with the feeling that for the first time I had just read a couple of Nyrae Dawn's books put together, but not in a good way. Maybe for the first time it was one of her YA's book where you need to be a YA to enjoy it. For a YA book (with heavy swearing) it is still pretty good, but it left me disappointed.
Will I read it again? No
Would I recommend it? Yes, but not to mature aged readers who like YA.

Sweet As Pie
By Ttime30
Such a great easy read. I just couldn't put it down. Was a great way to spend a lazy Sunday.
Ziah And Dylan was such a great combo min this book. They both complimented each other very well. The chemistry between both of them was instant and you felt it all the way to your toes.
It starts with Dylan throwing a party at his house. He's the path guy that only goes for hook ups with no real connections. And then in the middle of this party the crowd parts and Ziah appears. Ziah completely out of her element at this party is not impressed but catches Dylan eye and a connection begins. As quick as lightning Ziah is out there. As a month or so goes by Dylan just can't stop thinking about Ziah.
They both end up getting news that their siblings are getting married to each other. Dylan & Ziah for completely different reasons are not at all thrilled to have their siblings getting married.
That's when Ziah and Dylan's story really begins. Both of them having relationship issues but can not seem to stay away for each other.
I was quite impressed how the author was able to pull you in and take you on ride of emotions. I rose it to the end.
Such a sweet little love story that finds two people with hurts of their own and able to heal with each others help. I loved the authors writing style and loved being ale to see both Dylan & Ziahs POVs.
Excellent work!

Enough to pass the test but could have been better
By Rahul Parmar
I read this book and this book alone for the test and scored 91% (80% needed to pass the test). The book has less than 200 pages, only 120-130 of reading material. Shouldn't take more than 20 hours to read, revise, take all tests, and review all questions.

I think there were around 4-5 questions (out of 50) on the test that I could not answer simply because this book doesn't have that information (I read the book very carefully twice, so I am pretty sure). Other questions were very similar in style and difficulty as this book contains. So yes this book is sufficient to pass the test but does not cover 100%.

I decided to prepare for the test to learn about the cloud space from a business/application point of view in an organized manner. I think both the test and this book came a little short of that. The book is thin and a lot of material is repeated. It could have contained more info, at least for the test, but will help pass the test. The test itself can be more relevant and useful by expanding the scope of the test.

Book is execellant, Questions and LearnKey software include not help at all.
By Eric Steinberg
I read the book through once about two weeks before I took the exam (hint read it through just before you take the exam.) I took all of the tests provided on the DVD several times until I scored a 100% ( That didn't help) I downloaded the free exam from the Learn Key Software provided, (that didn't help) After I took the exam, damn the book nailed it in its narrative and not in the exam preps or review questions. Best to have a managers view on this or else. I did pass but not with an impressive grade as promised or touted by this book. Take in to the account I read it two weeks before I took the exam and never touched it until after I passed. Read the book.

Not a good resource
By gs
As a individual who has technology background I was looking for something comprehensive to supplement my learning I assumed this material would be adequate particularly since it was endorsed and featured on the Comptia website.

I read the reviews prior to purchasing the book. I figured I would give it the benefit of the doubt and be objective.
I should have listened to the reviews because the information presented in the book and the exam where miles apart!

Just as mentioned in the reviews the questions on the actual exam where MUCH harder than the sample exams given in the book. Not even close! The exam presents more of a "real world" indepth scenarios and business assumptions opposed to the lean introduction in the book.

I've read the book at least 3 times cover to cover and as soon as I read the first question on the exam I knew I was in for a long day.

The information in the book is very lean and does not have the depth to prepare you for the exam. In my opinion if you are new to cloud computing this book will not be enough to get you certified. Do not use as your exclusive reference for study. You will have to rely on experience and other reference books that have the depth of business scenarios.

Really disappointed.

Language Faculty Science, by Hajime Hoji

This book explores how we can aspire to accumulate knowledge about the language faculty in line with Feynman's 'The test of all knowledge is experiment'. The two pillars of the proposed methodology for language faculty science are the internalist approach advocated by Chomsky and what Feynman calls the 'Guess-Compute-Compare' method. Taking the internalist approach, the book is concerned with the I-language of an individual speaker. Adopting the Guess-Compute-Compare method, it aims at deducing definite predictions and comparing them with experimental results. It offers a conceptual articulation of how we deduce definite predictions about the judgments of an individual speaker on the basis of universal and language-particular hypotheses and how we obtain experimental results precisely in accordance with such predictions. In pursuit of rigorous testability and reproducibility, the experimental demonstration in the book is supplemented by an accompanying website which provides the details of all the experiments discussed in the book.

Review
"Hajime Hoji's careful study is a welcome contribution to the growing discipline of experimental linguistics. He provides a very careful analysis of the methodological issues, illustrating successes and pitfalls, and outlining a general approach that should be valuable in carrying this promising enterprise forward."
Noam Chomsky, Institute Professor and Professor of Linguistics (Emeritus), Massachusetts Institute of Technology

"A truly remarkable achievement. With the experimental methodology rigorously worked out in Language Faculty Science, generative linguistics could indeed become a viable empirical science, rather than a philosophy of mind."
Naoki Fukui, Sophia University, Tokyo
