Labour of Frustration

The author has a very unique and very irritating style of writing in which he seems hellbent to never use the same noun, pronoun or adjective in reference to any character twice. It is the friend, the officer, the tattooed officer, the gentleman, the suited gentleman, the blue-eyed man, the brown-eyed man, the son, the brother, the cousin, the Herculean, the Olympian, etc.,etc., ad nauseam. Add to this being thrown into Richard Scarry's Busytown where you encounter innumerable characters with no clue to distinguish important characters from incidental characters, lack of character development and using descriptive terms for characters before you are even aware that the description applies to anyone and you are confronted with a book that seems to be deliberately constructed to confuse and frustrate.

I was stubborn enough to stick it out to determine if there were a story beneath all the confusion but was only able to accomplish this by taking breaks between chapters to read another book before returning to this book. What I learned is that there is a quaint and bizarre story there but by no means worth the excruciating ordeal which can only be equated with translating a text written in Latin into English.

Most of the books I read pull me into them and I glide upon the words in a continued momentum. In this book the words were shards through which you must struggle to get to the story. I will not waste my time (or money) reading another book by this author.

As good as it gets

I had the fortune, and sometimes misfortune, to read a fair number of textbooks. All of them did promise to teach, though some proofed rather very disappointing on closer inspection.
This book on the other hand most certainly holds everything one can expect.
The book is divided into four parts: first, there is a small introction into the basics of astronomy, followed by a more in depth discussion of the solar system. The third part then covers stars and stellar evolution, while the final part is devoted to galaxies and cosmology.
The math required is minimal (i don't think the average high school graduate should have any problems), and a wealth of pictures and graphs, together with elaborate explanations in the text make sure, that this book will be a pleasure to learn from for the interested college student.
Every chapter (30 in all) ends with a short recapitulation of the most important concepts learned, a good number of review questions (to which the answers are supplied in the back of the book) and suggestions for further reading (books, magazines and weblinks).
The book comes also with a CD, on which there are further review tests to all chapters (of course with answers), as well as additional animations and much more.
As if that were not enough, there is a companion webside that offers additional tests and answers plus updated information, since after all, astronomy is progressing swiftly.
All in all, there cannot be much doubt that this is one of the best and most well rounded astronomy textbooks on the market. If you have to learn the basics of astronomy due to a course, or if you simply want to enrich your horizon, this book will make either task both easier and more enjoyable.

I'm the author of Universe w/ Starry Night Enthusiast CD-ROM, and I thank Lonewolf Astronomer for pointing out Amazon's error in describing the book as a hardcover --- it is in fact a softcover. I've asked Amazon to change their description to reflect this, and they have done so.

Lonewolf Astronomer included a link to Universe: The Solar System w/Starry Night Enthusiast CD-ROM, which is indeed cheaper than Universe. It is also quite a bit shorter, since it omits all of the chapters from Universe which concern stars, galaxies, and cosmology (Chapters 17-27).

Another abbreviated version of the book is Universe: Stars & Galaxies w/Starry Night Enthusiast CD-ROM, which includes all of the chapters from Universe on stars, galaxies, and cosmology but omits Chapters 9-15 on the solar system.

All three versions --- Universe, Universe: The Solar System, and Universe: Stars and Galaxies --- are available with the Starry Night Enthusiast CD-ROM.

Finally, in order to post this response, Amazon forced me to rate my own book. I hope the vast Amazon public will excuse the fact that I gave it five stars.

This is not a book that is to be read as short stories, as it is full of factual opinions, proven truths, dated discoveries, etc. Each chapter covers one society or location, each chapter filled with facts and theories as to what may or could have occurred. Some of these civilizations have left clues behind to help us begin to figure out what happened, while others have left nothing at all for us to follow. It was truly interesting to read about cultures and societies that we know about through various means that disappeared without a record of why.

I found that the author had done his research, the book was enjoyable and informative and it was a great learning experience, which was a good thing.

"Lost Civilizations" is an exceptionally well written and organized book. The author has the ability to transfix the reader with excitement and awe regarding the level of advancement and sophistication of the host of lost civilizations that have been discovered and studied, and his belief that there are many more left to be discovered. Many people I know are under the impression that ancient cultures were primitive, violent, disease ridden, with people that were primitive, ignorant savages living in caves or hovels, when nothing could be further from the truth. The more you study the ancients you realize that our ancestors either developed or had access to technologies that rival and in some cases surpass those of today. The more I study the history of our ancient ancestors the more I find startling similaritis between them and us. It is like a chain that link us, a chain forged by hopes, dreams, courage, hard work, ambition, spirituality, love, a desire for a better tomorrow for their children, in a word they are us. The more we study the past, read books like that of Mr. Phillips, I believe that we will better understand ourselves, how to improve our world. Lars Thinggaard is President and CEO of Milestone Systems A/S. Lars is a dynamic manager with years of entrepreneurial experience. He was Co-founder and CFO at Mondosoft, COO and CFO at Beologic (acquired by Baan), CFO at In2itive (acquired by SPSS), Auditor at Arthur Andersen and at Price Waterhouse, now Price Waterhouse Coopers. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Corporate Finance and Accounting from the Copenhagen Business School. Lars has been CEO of Milestone Systems A/S since 2003, steering the Danish-headquartered company to be the global industry leader in open platform Internet Protocol (IP) video management software. Under his leadership, Milestone Systems has followed a unique vision to bring the physical security industry together as a business eco- system. During his thirteen years as CEO, Milestone Systems’ revenue has increased more than fifteenfold. Today, Milestone is one of the most valuable companies in the video management software industry.

Milestone has proven to be an excellent product for our customers

When I saw an email from Milestone telling me that their CEO had published a book, I quickly grabbed the Kindle version. As an employee of a busy security integrator, I work with Milestone frequently. Milestone has proven to be an excellent product for our customers, and the company has been incredibly successful. I've been very curious as to the story behind the company, and this book satisfied. Lars tells the story in a very conversational manner, weaving his own story effectively into the saga of Milestone. From the Scandinavian management model, to why Milestone is an open platform, to the acquisition by Canon, he covers it all. I highly recommend this book not only to people in the physical security industry, but to anyone involved in tech startups. It is a quick, fun read.

Nice to hear from a Scandinavian view of the world

Always enjoyable to hear theory put into practice. Nice to hear from a Scandinavian view of the world. This is an easy read because it's concise, well - written, and nicely structured. They are innovating to disrupt an industry, and the insights on their path towards the IPO process and acquisition also offered interesting interesting insights. I felt tired just reading it... Their Open stance towards partnering will serve them well. This isn't the easiest path, but the one that will serve them best in the long run.
